Guest Posted March 31, 2003 Posted March 31, 2003 I can't vouch for shotokan, but in my style a knifehand strike the fingers are pointed toward the target at impact to minimize the contact area, and with the block the fingers are perpendicular to the incoming strike to maximize the area the block covers.
hobbitbob Posted April 1, 2003 Posted April 1, 2003 If you are asking us these questions, should you be testing? There have always been Starkadders at Cold Comfort Farm!
Withers M.A.A. Posted April 1, 2003 Posted April 1, 2003 We all need to remember at the beginning of our training things were VERY confusing. Knowing the differences between a front ball kick and instep kick were enough to confuse anyone at first. Couple that with knowing what a kata is or punch tech. etc. 2nd Degree black belt in Kenpo Karate and Tae Kwon Do. 1997 NASKA competitor-2nd place Nationally in Blackbelt American Forms. Guest Posted April 1, 2003 Posted April 1, 2003 I agree. If you have only now just learned what the technique is, how could you be expected to perform it properly? I know that I felt my techniques were being performed properly many times, but were incorrect. There are many subtleties to your technique that you are not aware of because you don't have someone to demonstrate for you proper technique, or you correct your mistakes. How do you know if a technique is being performed correcly if you don't know what the properly perfomed technique is? And on the question of testing etiquette. Show up. Be there on time. Don't get angry or frustrated if you don't know something. If you aren't awarded rank, then don't get angry and DON'T QUIT. Don't worry, I've never seen anyone denied rank. The instructor will just make sure that you know it by the next one.
