What was the MA used for is a question that will answer the WHYs of each particular MA. Jumping from trees might be taught because it was useful back in the day.

Ninjutsu has stealth techniques you can learn, but it is much more than stealth. It's a whole system of fighting and tactics. It is essentially Jujutsu with some Ninpo in it. I don't even think there is such thing as pure Ninjutsu.

ninjitsu translates as the art of espionage and stealth and jujutsu translates as the art of gentleness.

Why punch someone when their on the ground when you can just kick them

Togakure Ryu is not all stealth and espionage it is a fighting Art, and it is very similar to certain Jujutsu.

right, but they train different things - my understanding of ninpo is that it is basically several arts combined into one - ninjutsu is the art of stealth - that's what the ninja is all about, and (I'm guessing here) why the art is called ninjutsu. The locking and throwing is from taijutsu. The striking is likely from some form of jujutsu, and so on...

so, in a nutshell, ninjustsu is a recursive name (which you like, if you're a hacker) for an art that teaches ninjutsu, bujutsu, taijutsu, etc.

Ninja knew how to kill and fight as well, right? So basically they fought like battle ready Samurai and knew the art of stealth. Ninja were basically like the special forces of old. There are Ninjutsu Ryu that were lost, but 3 still exist and they have fighting in them. Taijutsu means BODY MOVEMENT and Ninpo Taijutsu means Ninja body movement. So basically there is a difference between Ninpo Taijutsu and Jujutsu. Because of the stealth and evasion taught in Ninjutsu the Taijutsu is slightly modified so that stealth and fighting blend seemlessly. I hope this helps.

y'know, i always thought that 'ninja' was just a term used to identify a person that is on a covert mission.

damn, my english is totally gone to pot today....

i mean, whenever anyone, at the time, went on a 'mission' that involved stealth (and this is basically anyone that the shogun or whoever commands to carry out the mission) is called a ninja.

y'know, so sometimes, maybe a 'bog standard' samurai is called to go on an assasination mission

BUT has no formal training in the ninja arts...

hmm, maybe someone should take a little time to explain just who were ninja.

post count is directly related to how much free time you have, not how intelligent you are.
