Because you need to practice control, technique, proper hitting etc. first

I would also recommend waiting before you get gi or any equipment specifically for this club - Do you even know you will enjoy training there yet?

Yes, I took a tour class. I didn't do much of the real hard stuff cause well it was a trial class sort of thing you know those freebie type things. Anyway I stumbled upon this while looking at a site http://www.karate-mart.com/eaglecatcher.html shoudl I use that to condition my grip?

i think practice is good. i would personally add forearm pads and shin/instep gear to my list. the karate book is a good idea, never thought about it before! definately add a mouth piece and head gear as well. just be careful at first and don't try to over do it. in tkd we started doing sparring the first week, so i dunna? just make sure you don't kill each other and work as a team and tell each other what/ what not to do. it works well that way. does you from do MA?
