SaiFightsMS Posted March 30, 2003 Posted March 30, 2003 The first link illustrated kiba dachi. Notice that both feet are pointed forward and parallel to each other. From that position pivot on your heels and point your feet out keeping them in line with your knees and lower your self into shiko dachi. http://www.gojuryu.net/ This is a nice goju link.
theswarm Posted March 31, 2003 Posted March 31, 2003 like the last person said get into kiba dachi turn your feet 45 degrees sit low i generally have just over a 90 degree angle on my knees when i sit in sumo stance remember to keep your back straight and make sure you don't lean in i see alot of early belt levels in my school seem to fall in the habit of like pushing their knees forward and leaning backward its like the worst habit to get into because it actually makes shiko dachi more painful to not sit in it straight
NinjaMaster Posted March 31, 2003 Posted March 31, 2003 You should not let people boss you about because you have narrow feet. I hate it when this hapens. Not everyone has feet that are the same width as 2 shoulder lengths. Most dont. Its unreasonable to expect this. Not everyone is born with enourmous feet.
BKJ1216 Posted March 31, 2003 Posted March 31, 2003 I still don't understand what legs at shoulder length means. Anyone care to elaborate? White Belt- Shudokan Karate
NinjaMaster Posted March 31, 2003 Posted March 31, 2003 It means they expect your legs to be the same width as the distance between your shoulders which as i stated before is unfair.
BKJ1216 Posted March 31, 2003 Posted March 31, 2003 Well coudln't you just put your feet out to the side more? White Belt- Shudokan Karate
hongkongfooi Posted March 31, 2003 Posted March 31, 2003 imagine sitting on a horse sit low arch the back this is a wide stance with the presure on the legs poinying outwards and the feet pointing to 45 % (point the toes to one corner of the room and the other toes to the other corner) http://www.quill47.karoo.net

SaiFightsMS Posted March 31, 2003 Posted March 31, 2003 The most common mistake I have seen people make when they first start doing shiko dachi is to have the stance to narrow - meaning the feet are closer together. Then when they lower there self into the stance instead of the knees staying lined up over the ankles the knees move out over the toes - which is definately harmful to the knees.
