My experience if you do a carotid artery choke it takes about 3 seconds from the time you've applied it correctly. The brain has no reserve of oxygen. From my medic training I know that the brain can go about 4 minutes with out oxygen before brain damage occures. 10 minutes w/o oxygen and they are dead for sure. The longer you hold the choke the longer it will take them to wake up.

A windpipe choke takes forever but is painfull as hell. They will either tap out right away or in a fight they will loose it and start squirming and making all kinds of horrible noises.

In Judo class I always went for the choke if it went to the ground. Being tall and thin I didn't have the leverage that the shorter stockier guys had. Lapel choke was my favorite for a sacrifice throw gone bad or if they muscle you down and land on top of you. Their body weight makes it more effective.

Being thin I can confirm that it is harder to choke a thin person. Only a couple of the instructors could choke me out while I could always choke the guys with thick necks... that is if I could get a hold of their necks... :D
