What would you do if you wanted to learn some form of fighting, and had no instructors? No boxing gyms, no martial arts, nothing. Would you

A) do nothing and sit back on the couch?

B) Pick up some books and teach yourself basics of different styles of fighting? and refine those basics till you have it down. (IE: Learn some basic JJ takedowns and submissons, learn some MT kicking strikes, learn Boxing, etc etc)

also...

what styles of combat do you think would be the easiest for one to learn on there own?

As for people saying that you cant learn without an instructor....people have learned how to fight on there own, and created there own styles without having anyone show them... Okinawan Karate Masters decided one day to make a fighting art to protect themselves... and they decided to use some common weapons to go along with it... they CREATED there own art..no one showed them. Soplease, try to refrain from the simple "you cant do it without an instructor" comments. I am looking for some good answers here, my grade depends on it lol.

This is for a report I am doing for college. So, answers would be really helpful.

buy some videos, videos would probably do you better than books, and boxing/muay thai/wrestling (im guessing) would be "easier" to learn on your own.

and what you don't understand, is that those okinawans, might have done it without teachers. but they did not do it alone. they did it with the help of others, and over a significant period of time.

They also had motivation, fight or get tortured/killed, by the samurai. I hope you have your friends help. and what exactly are the objectives of your project? if you don't mind me asking?

Ok, you want to learn to do it without an instructor?

Go get a book or several books. Study them. Take notes, think about it, carry them with you everywhere you go. Practice the techniques, learn the theory, understand the body mechanics. Practice on makiwara and heavy bags. Repeat the motions 1000s of times until it is perfect. Then practice that perfect technique 1000s more times. Then re-read all of the books and "start over." Do this everyday for hours for about 1 year.

Then, find some random guy who could care less about not hurting you and FIGHT them. Maybe start at the bus station. Note, I said FIGHT, not SPAR. No refs, no gear, no rules. Just scrap with them and use what you've learned.

If you win, keep practicing, and fight people bigger and stronger until you lose.

When you lose, re-examine everything and refine it. Then go try to kick that guy's butt again until you win. Do this for about 10-20 years.

If you can do this, consistently win, and then teach your method to someone else and have it work for them, then I would officially say that you've learned to fight. But you would not be a master of any particular style.

If you want to learn Karate... "Proper Noun" Karate, and not generic "karate" then you're just going to have to get an instructor and learn it as they teach it to you.

Doing what I've suggested above will probably make you an expert in lower-case "karate" but it will still NOT be a specific, identifiable form of "Karate." Unless of course your mastery of lower-case "karate" becomes so good, you can now consider yourself a Soke, and teach craknek-ryu karate. In which case, retreat to a cave for nine years, release your manifesto of strategy, and we will all worship your spirit for centuries to come.

I'm no longer posting here. Adios.

Jiu-Jitsu Fighter, the project is on... hmm, how do I explain this, its on, what would happen if a group of people became isolated from the rest of the world, almost like a Mad Maxx or Waterworld type of scenario, and they wanted to learn how to defend themselves from what they could salvage from around them as far as old books, etc etc. Sounds crazy I know, but very creative lol =).

Tom...... The most remarkable thing is, alot of instructor who teach self defense... use simple and basic techniques with alot of efficencey. I went to a seminar where this guy... small in size asked 3 volunteers to come up and try to hit him as hard as they could.. all 3 at the same time... just try to wail into him.. and the instructor within.. I would say 10 seconds had all of them on the mat... by doing some basic judo throws, basic JJ takedowns, and a few locks from the standing position. He later fought a Blackbelt from the local area...a 4th dan in karate, the fight lasted a lil longer, but the small instructor won again, by doing a few handstrikes (which looked powerful) followed up by a basic takedown into a armbar. Nothing to flashy..

Besides Tom, the scenario I am using, no one is trying to create a new style, there trying to create there OWN style..... like in the JKD concept and philosphy.

Thanks for the answers!! Keep'em coming.

What's the difference?

I'm not trying to be inflammatory, but I'm not sure what your goal here is exactly. Do you want to be an expert fighter? Do what I said above, and you will be. You will have created your own style. Heck, a new style which I'm sure once your reputation for knocking the crap out of people is known, will be very popular.

Do you want to Learn a specific Martial Art? Then you're probably going to have to do it the hard way.

Is my route the same as being a black belt in a legitimate ryu? Nope. You'd be consderably better than most black belts I've seen. But why would you care what it is then? You would essentially be a Master in your own right, and it really wouldn't matter if some sniveling dojo rat told you that your technique was an impure bastardized mix. :)

Tom....LOLOLOL

Ok OK... as far as what kind of martial art.. it would be various ones mixed together, like a basterdized mix =).

What styles would be the easiest to learn on your own (your going to use them all.. in a mix)? I would say Boxing, Some kind of Kicking style, maybe some basic to intermediate TKD kicks or MT kicks. and you would need to know a grappling art... like JJ or Greco Roman. Hmm, that would probably cover it all to make a well rounded fighter.
