Some things on knife defense:

someone who knows how to use a knife is extremly tough to defend. They can probably hit you with some substantial hits in 2-4 seconds and then take a step back and watch you bleed and then finish you off once you get woozy. A good cut to the femoral artery gives you about 15-20 seconds before you go out and die. If you get attacked I hope it is in winter and you are wearing layers of clothes and wearing leather.

long range weapons are best vs knife (belt, sticks, etc). I am sure everyone has heard of the police training video that shows a knife guy getting to the cop from 21 feet before the officer can remove his gun, sight the weapon and squeeze off a round.

After 15 years of trainig in MA I still don't feel comfortable with knife defenses. We have done those drills where you put on the white shirt and lipstick on the blade and go at it. After about about five minutes you both are covered in red.

In any case, someone said it right before, you are going to get cut.

Another scary thing is to look at those prison videos with the shankings. Hard to see, fast and always to a vital organ scary stuff.

true words of wisdom...again, just accept that once it starts, you will get cut. Best ideais to not be in that situation. You could also jsut run once it starts :brow:

You may think, yeah, but what's the chance of meeting someone trained in FMA like knife fighting?

Yeah, kuntao is mixed with a bit of silat, and one of my teachers is an ex-marine so we do knife work in the school I am at. My friends and I practise what we learn frequently (let's just say we're all big fans of the movie 'The Hunted', and leave it at that :D ) so like he said, don't think there aren't people trained in knife fighting. Not that we're likely to attack anyone, but just an example.

My wife used to work for the guy who made the knives for the movie "The Hunted." Very dangerous fellow, but looked like your usual middle aged, overweight couch potato. The other really good knife fighter I've met was a guy name Bob Krull. Probably the deadliest person I've ever met, armed or otherwise. He was only about 5' 6" and skinny. Point is you probly won't ever see it coming if it's someone who does know what they're doing.

Getting a blackbelt just says you have learned the basics and are ready to actually study the form as an art.

edged weapons are hard, edged and rounded are harder! i was once attacked by 2 guys, no weapon showing, we got in a fight, still no weapon vissible, an all of a sudden - WHAM - there was an ice pick flying at my chest, MA taught me the best thing to do was move, i didnt do it fast enough so now i have a perfectley round scar 11inches from my heart i defended quick enough to stop almost all serious damage from occuring although i still find it hard to breath in cold climates :kaioken: 8)

The winner in a knife fight is the person who gets to die in the ambulance on the way to the hospital. Police fear someone in close with a knife more than someone far away with a gun, and for good reason.

That being said, I do know someone who has been attacked by a mugger with a knife and "won" the fight, without being injured. But defending against a knife is a LAST RESORT. Give the guy what he wants.

Getting back to the original question...Yes, I have seen "Surviving Edged Weapons". Our department used it as a training tool..as did the State POST school. I remember vividly....which is a good thing!
