Craknek,

How often do you practise in class to stop someone from taking you down with a double-leg ? How often do you practise with someone going full speed who knows how to do a double-leg properly ?

If the answer is never, or very rarely, then you've got bugger-all chance of stopping a double-leg in a fight.

Everyone needs to know how to fight standing and on the ground. No technique if fool proof. Unless you know you are alone with the guy and it is one on one I would stay standing as long as possidle.

Take me down with a doubble leg take down and see how far that gets you when 3 of my friends come out of the crowd and start kicking you.

Best defence for that is gun or run like hell... Try that from the ground.

I will always try to make the fight as un-fair as possible. If you are over 15 you should assume that every fight you get in is to the death because the little gang banger you run into is gonna treat it that way. He has friends.

If you can run first. If you can't hit untill you can run or can land a deciding blow.

A grappler will always beat a non-grappler if it is one on one and the other guy isn't thinking about biting you!

Learn both, study strategies and tactics, be able to run!

Why is it people seem to think that grapplers have no friends ?

It seems a popular defense to say "But if you took me to the ground my friends would kick your head in". What if my friends were there also ?

BTW, if you think biting is going to stop a fight, you're delusional.

Biting would be a major distraction with the pain and blood and all. It won't win the fight but it will make the other guy think.

I'm not say'n that grapplers don't have friends but they are not with you all the time. What I am say'n about the other guy's the backup (his friends) is that you are not always going to know if they are there or not.

If you are in a bar fight and you got five frends there by all means take him to the ground. If you are there by your self be careful about going to the ground. His friends might sit back until he needs help or quietly move around behind you to strike.

Example: If you are in an argument that turns into a fight and you take the guy to the ground and start trashing him. His friend (standing in the background) thinks he can articulate in court how he believed that you intended to cause great bodly harm or death to his pal. Maybe his friend is screaming cauz you are hurting him. He can walk up and knofe you in the back. There is a good chance he will get off, especialy if others in the croud thought you were hurting him bad. If you die that is one less witness for your side. If you have friends there it might be too late for them to do anything.

I know how to fight from the ground but I will stay on my feet as long as possible.

Johnny... we do train on how to avoid grapples somewhat, do we focus on entirely? Grapples, I feel would have an easier time against other toe to toe fighters, or other styles that rely heavy on handstrikes... the closer the grappler is to you, the closer he is to taking you down.

The TKD that my instructor teaches, we generally stay about 5-6 ft away from a grappler, be it Greco, JJ, etc. The reason for this is to give us time to react to there shoot in... and if possible, as we attempt to avoid, to kick.

I was watching a video today of my instructor fighting a JJ fighter. He has made it a habit, since he acquired his BB to go to other schools and fight full contact, to fight outside the scope of TKD, which I think is a great idea.

Anyways, in this video he was showing us the principle of keeping distance, how if we moved to within 3 ft, we were gonna go down to the mat, whether we wanted to or not. But he stayed about 6 ft away... bouncing around, ready for the JJ guy to shoot. It took about a min, as neither one wanted to attack first, and then it happened, the guy shot in.... with plenty of room between then, Master Coker skipped about a foot, maybe more back... and delivered a snap kick to the side of the guys head... teh guy dropped and tried getting back up.... a thrust kick later.. the match was over.

Now, dont get me wrong, Master Coker has lost to grapplers before, but in doing so, he has learned what to do and not to do.... so now, he has a betetr chance.. and showed us, that yes, you can avoid the shoot, if your quick and aware.

I fully expect JJF to reply back somehow with something alomg the lines of it was a lucky shot, or the JJ fighter, sucked etc etc. l

what kind of comeptition was this , no-holds-barred?

and one mistake that grapplers do alot is they see an opening for a double leg, but its just an illusion. I would much rather, use some judo throws to takedown my opponent, and I am a mma guy not a pure grappler. So I can see both sides of the spectrum.

what was the skill of the jjf your sensai was fighting ?

I believe you can never "just shoot in" you have to mix it up with at least a combo of kicks and punches, before you go for the takedown.

good for your sensai, good luck on your future training.
