NinjaMaster
You all say you can see the weeknesses but you do it. You all say its not about the fighting but you all talk about fighting. You all say its about the art but if you want art why do Karate when there are more spiritual sytems. EXPLAIN.....
jmy77
Easy there - not all, you should never use all encompassing statements. I never said most of those things... Yes I know Kenpo Karate has weaknesses - and if you believe that there are no weaknesses to your system/style, then you need to open your eyes - everything has a weakness - and it much better to know what it is! I do karate for the defense and the fighting - not saying I run around picking fights, because that's plain stupid - but i enjoy the sparring. I don't do karate for the art, I am not after spiritual enlightenment, I am after an effective self defense system and doing something physically demanding (as i spend 12 hours day behind a desk and sitting on a train)And that is exactly what kenpo gives me. So i implore you to please be careful how you phrase your sentences. "Don't hit at all if it is honorably possible to avoid hitting; but never hit soft." - Pres. Theodore Roosevelt "You don't have to like it, you just have to do it." - Captain Richard Marcinko, USN, Ret."Do more than what is required of you." - General George S. Patton"If you have to step on someone else to stand tall, then you truely are a small person." - ?
crash
1.as with most things, the more proficient you become at it the easier it is to see what would/could be weaknesses, and from seeing this you know what to change/work at. but that doesnt meen it (the art as a whole) would'nt work, esp. against someone who is untrained. 2.For the most part it is'nt about the fighting, most ppl will probably never have to use it in such a way but if the need arises it is always better to be prepared. 3.True there are more spiritual arts, just as there are other things someone could choose to do with there time.whatever art someone chooses is just personal preference. just as some choose it for self defence, some to get in better shape, some for the tournaments, some for the freindships made or for the structure, the list of why do it can be answered differently by any individual. NinjaMaster
Yes and some people use it to paint the fence and some to wax their car. You are supposed to be warriors studying the art of war. War is not a pretty thing. Art does not have to be pretty. Killing is never honourable. Keep it real and what it was intended for. Learn to fight well, Karate teaches this. Dont get lost in the political correct crap of how it makes you better people. It might do that but thats not what its about. Fighting is a lonely place. Lets face it if you only wnted to get fit you would run or something. Truth is humans are destructive and highly defensive. You would have been warriors in another time. aes
I cannot speak for everyone here but here are my thoughts. I worked out in a gym for years and got bored of it. I like involving fitness as part of my life due to my desk job not providing me enough exercise to be healthy IMO. I decided to take MA to get exercise but it comes with a secondary benefit of learning effective fighting techniques if needed. That being said, learning fighting skill taught in Karate helps me be more confident in a argument situation that if it escalates to a physical fight, I am ready (eventually). Now that I am into MA I like fact it helps teach focus and attention to small details as well. Is the fact that I am taught techniques to kill or maim an attacker in one or two blows a bit of a power trip… for me yes it is. Do I plan on ever using this? No I don’t. Just nice to be perhaps a bit better off if it comes to this than I would be without these skills. 43 Years oldBlue Belt (7th Kyu) Shorin-ryuRoberts Karate

BKJ1216
I'm using it because I find it very intresting. I also want to use it as a form of weight loss and self defense. I'm not very intrested in fighting. White Belt- Shudokan Karate

Lets face it if you only wnted to get fit you would run or something. Who says that we have to keep any style exactly what it was intended for? You? Everyone has their own opinions and views about martial arts. If we didn't, there wouldn't be as many MAs as there are today. So don't ocme in here and say that we have to learn Karate only to be able to fight well. Yes that's why I am in it, but i know lots of people that are in MA to be in better shape and just to simply keep active. I'm sure you are a very good fighter and would probably be able to kick my ass( I am a yellow belt in karate), but that still doesn't give you the right to tell us that we suck at what we do and why we do it. What is your style anyway? Now, whatever I say to you will probably not affect YOU because you will probably always hate on Karate, but hopefully this will be able to show people your ignorance in your own post. Just thought I should add this: Ninja Master joined KarateForums on the 17th. That's today! This is his 1st and only post on Karate Forums. Sounds to me like Ninja is just a basher. BKJ1216
I've noticed that you seem to be contradicting almost everything you say. One moment you say that martial arts are uselss, the next you say that karate teachers you how to fight. White Belt- Shudokan Karate
FlailingLimbs
I personally think this little one has seen way too freaking many martial arts movies...no...wait.... I mean those crappy 80's cliche ninja cheese movies... those aren't even proper MA movies... ..anyways, I'm pretty sure this one hasn't really ever done a MA, damn I hate these types.... ===================When cornered, kick 'em in the spetznats. If that doesn't work, run around acting like an epilept + flail your arms about while whizzin' in your pants, then fall down foaming at the mouth. They'll be so disgusted THEY will walk away from the fight....
