CMA Posted March 17, 2003 Posted March 17, 2003 The praying mantis is one of the animal systems in Shaolin temple Kung fu. I only know one mantis form but it includes: sweeps, armbreaks, and striking pressure points using the mantis claw.
jiu-jitsu fighter Posted March 17, 2003 Posted March 17, 2003 I studied praying mantis for a while, (northern seven stars). Its a whole style of kung fu and the mantis form is found in the northern shaolin system of kung fu. Because after the monks were beaten by it( wang lang beat them) they added it to their system. But praying mantis (northern seven stars) is a complete system on its on. Its got sweeps and strikes, but its doesn't emphasize kicking. It emphasizes very fast hand movements. rb Posted March 19, 2003 Posted March 19, 2003 JJF, I've heard two variations on that story. Both start with Wong studying shaolin boxing and being consistently beat by his senior. When his senior left the temple Wong vowed to improve his skill. He later witnessed the battle between the mantis and cicada. He studied and incoporated some of the movements of the mantis with shaolin boxing. He also looked at the movements and footwork of monkeys. Here's where the two variations come out. 1) this new system was superior and when wong fought his senior again, he easily defeated him. or 2)Wong was still defeated by his senior but not as easily. This was credited to the knowledge gap in martial skill between the two. The movements were still recognized as valuable and they were later refined by more experienced monks. I'd say the kicking base in the mantis system is strong. It's base system is shaolin and retains alot of their strategy and movements.
jmd161 Posted April 26, 2003 Posted April 26, 2003 rb, You're actually right on with your post. It's actually a mixture of the two endings you have. With #1 being the final ending. He then along with his senior helped to teach the style to the other monks. You have several schools of praying mantis of both northern and southern china decent. If i remember correctly their are like 7 different schools of Northern Praying Mantis.Named after the designs found on the back of seven actual living praying mantis. Some but not all mantis styles use Monkey styles footwork and kicks. Southern Mantis looks nothing like It's Northern brothers. It uses a lot of hand techniques and low kicks. Monkey Style - There are several schools of monkey style also. The most famous is most likely Tai Shing Pek Kwar.Monkey Style although comical at time is a very effective and firce fighting style.
