Control Point Posted March 13, 2003 Posted March 13, 2003 Ok so i had a hard time thinking of the right title for this post. What im talknig about is striking while grappling in class. I hear alot of people talk about full contact but i get the feeling they are talking about hitting hard with gear on. during my classes we go full out groundwork with strikes, no gear this includes closed fists, elbows, and headbutts. of course we dont do them full force like we are trying to kill the other person but enough you know you are leaving yourself open. not everyone does this and its not required but most of us do as well as the instructor. I think this helps alot because i feel if you practice grappling or submissions with no strikes you tend to not think about them, and wether in a real fight or a nhb comp the strikes are going to come, not preparing for them could prove most harsh. I was just wondering if anyone else trains the same way and how people feel about it. when i try to explain the cuts and bruises on my head to everyday people they look at me like im psychotic. If i still have all my blood it was a good fight, if not, it was a great fight._______________________________________Kenpo
ZeRo Posted March 13, 2003 Posted March 13, 2003 that would be cool, one day i would like to go full out.
Kensai Posted March 13, 2003 Posted March 13, 2003 I would not say I do NHB rules, but on occasion, I meet up with a few mates from other systems (wing Chun, karate, judo and Ba Gua). And do virtually full power anything goes. I would agree that classical Judo/BJJ osaekomi is not really going to prepare you for those strikes. Its just a matter of training against them and being ready.
jiu-jitsu fighter Posted March 13, 2003 Posted March 13, 2003 well thats the thing , bjj is classified into two styles really, sport and vale tudo , now at my school its in between so im not really concerned about that. also there is a combat submission wrestling class at my school they strike on the ground but im not allowed joining that class yet, because im only sixteen. I would think that being well versed in jiu-jitsu that would be my advantage on the street. i mean your not going to encounter mma fighters on the street, (hopefully) so if the guy starts striking you on the ground he (probably) won't know what the hell your doing, than bang! when he throws a punch kimura, armbar, triangle etc... in my bjj class if we were to strike on the ground we would get really f******* because even though we don't do striking on the ground we know how to defend against strikes on the ground. Ka0ticSH Posted March 14, 2003 Posted March 14, 2003 when i try to explain the cuts and bruises on my head to everyday people they look at me like im psychotic. haha I understand that .. very well. ive done a lot of strikin since i been training, and when i started training with ground fighting and grappling, bout two years ago, i sorta tried to incorporate the two, its worked well since then last week i got kneed right under my eye .. and to the side of my head .. and whenever anyone asks i sorta go speechless .. see .. if i tell em i train bjj they'll be like Oh that UFC THING ? DAMN FOO SHOW ME A MOVE .. and i then i regret saying anything it is a hard situation. "Accept what is useful. Reject what is useless." -Bruce LeeShodan - Shizukana-do
yellowsnow Posted March 14, 2003 Posted March 14, 2003 My school does not go full out...but me and one of my friends do... it's the closest thing you can get the the 'real deal' and to be prepared without walking the street picking fights so you can try your techniques.. YS
Control Point Posted March 14, 2003 Author Posted March 14, 2003 I know what you mean about the show me a move thing. people seem to think any martial art has some jaw dropping jet lee reverse kick over the shoulder while spinning 540 sideways, heres my advice, if the person is persistant on seeing one, show them a few groin techiques, that should satisfy thier curiosity If i still have all my blood it was a good fight, if not, it was a great fight._______________________________________Kenpo
Tombstone Posted March 14, 2003 Posted March 14, 2003 We strike and grapple at my gym. Like you said, we don't use full force while sparring. We have tournaments about once every month(sometimes longer) and you need to be able to strike from the ground.
