Weapons Training

Recommended Posts

I have finally settled on a master to train under. He offers weapons training, ChongKwonDo, Combat Hapkido and trad. Tawkwondo. If I am going to go heavy into Weapons Training, then to balance everything out, do you think it would be wise to take trad Taekwondo? The reasoning behind it is that My hands would be occupied with a weapon (from weapons training) so i would need to do something with my legs to balance everything out, thus Taekwondo. If I did Weapons Training and Combat Hapkido, then that would mean that I am focusing alot of training onto most of my upper body, with little training on the legs. Any feedback would be helpful. Thanks.

I'm not sure if I'm clear on how he breaks out his classes. Most instructors will not teach weapons (except in arts like Krav Maga) until after you have some solid empty hand experience. After all, if you get separated from your weapon, you still need to defend yourself.

I would think a combo of all three would be in order, but only after you've got enough of either the Hapkido or TKD first.

Well, he offers two classes a night on Weapons Training, and 2 classe a night on TKD and Hap, you can attend both kind if you like, or you can just take weapons training or you can just focus on TKD or Hap. He does not make it that you have to take weapons training or vice versa.

Interesting approach.

I personally prefer mostly hand techniques. Therefore, if you're only going to take two, I would go for the Hapkido and weapons. There are still kicks in Hapkido, just focused more from waist down. On the other hand, TKD is not always without grappling either.

Watch both and see which one you prefer. He may allow you to switch if you start in one, and choose to go to the other.

Well, if you're looking to really develop the leg techniques, traditional TKD would be an excellent way to go, but like KSN said, other styles are not entirly without kicking, so you should definitly watch some classes and see which you think you might like. But IMO, if you're looking for kicks, TKD is pretty hard to beat, and well taught, it is not entirely kicking, so see how this instructor teaches it.

Might as well take my advice--I don't use it anymore.
