Kunoichi Posted March 13, 2003 Posted March 13, 2003 I am studying Goshin-ryu karate. My school teaches over twenty empty hand katas as well as weapons katas from white to black belt. Is this about the same as some of the other styles? "The Deadly Flower"
G95champ Posted March 13, 2003 Posted March 13, 2003 That sounds about right for a style of karate. (General George S. Patton Jr.) "It's the unconquerable soul of man, and not the nature of the weapon he uses, that ensures victory."
SaiFightsMS Posted March 13, 2003 Posted March 13, 2003 Shotokan has 26 katas, shito ryu has over 50, isshin ryu has 8 empty hand katas, Matsubayashi shorin ryu has 18 empty hand katas. There really isn't a right or a wrong number of katas for a style to have.
SandanPJ Posted March 13, 2003 Posted March 13, 2003 14 for Shodan in Kenpo Karate..But then there is like a hundred more. I know 25 and I still know nothing at all...
chh Posted March 13, 2003 Posted March 13, 2003 There are only 12 in Goju-ryu. I believe you only learn 6 of them before Shodan (maybe it's 7, not sure).
BKJ1216 Posted March 13, 2003 Posted March 13, 2003 ^I was reading a book that I checked out of the library. It said that okinawan goju-ryu has 14 kata. What type of goju do you do? Oh and can someone find out how many kata shudokan has? White Belt- Shudokan Karate
chh Posted March 13, 2003 Posted March 13, 2003 I study Okinawan Jundokan. I guess it's actually 13 in my school, since there are two versions of Sanchin. I've also heard of schools teaching some sort of very short pre-kata katas, or something like that, I think there maybe three of them. There are indeed different flavors of Goju-ryu, you're going to have plenty of variation from school to school. May I suggest YOU go find out how many kata Shudokan has? Not trying to be snooty, but if you go out looking on your own you'll find an answer to that question, as well as a hundred other questions you didn't even know you had. Here's a starting point --> http://www.google.com
HachiKyu Posted March 13, 2003 Posted March 13, 2003 yeah shotokan has 26 also a kata that is for a special tournament that sensei nishiyama wrote himself called kite/kiite however its spelled im sure the first is right and i know about 8, you learn 7 before your first shodan though.
