Beer-monster Posted March 12, 2003 Posted March 12, 2003 Just a general question about the application of this common kata technique. Is Shoto-uchi an arching strike or a straight one? Gichin Funakoshi in Karate do my way of life desribes it as a straight chop like in kendo, and this would fit with the fact that the carotid arteries, the techniques primary target, are located at the front of the neck not the sides. However in kata the technique is more of a rotational arching slash than a thrusting strike, and this would account for the hip rotation in the movement? Any thoughts, coz I'm confused. Mind, body and fist. Its all a man truly needs.
ramymensa Posted March 26, 2003 Posted March 26, 2003 First of all it's SHUTO UCHI not SHOTO If you want to see some images try http://www.dojo.ro/tehnici.htm It's in Romanian, but don't be discouraged. Look for Shuto Uchi and even Shuto Uke and maybe it'll help World Shotokan Karate
SaiFightsMS Posted March 26, 2003 Posted March 26, 2003 Shuto uchi is done as both an arcing movement and a linear movement.
