Shotokan Terms, Words

Grunt

Recommended Posts

OK, looks like I'm going to give Shotokan a try. One thing I've noticed is that the instructors like to refer to each technique with the Japanese words and terms. Since I'm a beginner they explain what they want me to do in English, but it's apparent to me that I do need to learn these terms anyway (in Japanese.)

Can anyone recommend any books that might cover these terms and words? Maybe some Internet links? G96champ recommended a book by Funakoshi so I will probably check it out. Does it have the Japanese terms? Also, can anyone recommend any other good books? Thanks!

Hi Grunt,

Here is a couple of sites with terminology.

http://www.geocities.com/tokyo/fuji/2890/terminology.html

http://members.lycos.co.uk/Tamari/terminology.htm

Another good site for Shotokan is http://www.24fightingchickens.com/shotokan/

SaiFights also has posted some terminology sites under the general Martial Arts section, check them out as well.

Hope this helps you some. Good luck with your training. Remember to have fun.

You can search Shotokan Karate and get lists of the terms.

Go to your local book store and just look at some books some will have charts with word banks in them. There is a blue book called something like Karate Techinques and Stratgies. It deals with karate in general no certin style but it has some nice charts and word banks.

Complete Shotokan Karate by Bell is also a good book to pick up.
