BKJ1216 Posted March 12, 2003 Posted March 12, 2003 Well I just recently discovered there was a doju-ryu dojo in my area. Now I can't decide between it and shudokan. Can someone please tell me what they would choose? BTW If you don't know shudokan is a lot like shotokan with a few different kata moves that are taught when you are high enough rank. Kyle-san Posted March 12, 2003 Posted March 12, 2003 Go check both of them out and see which one you personally enjoy more. Easy as that.
JohnnyS Posted March 19, 2003 Posted March 19, 2003 I would definately do Goju if I were you. Especially if it's Okinawan. It's very good. Shotokan is basically karate for kids. Funokoshi modified karate so he could teach it to children and it was then called Shotokan. I've found Shotokan to be too Japanese i.e. too linear, too hard and too stylized. Goju is one of the arts that Shotokan was derived from, has both circular and linear movements, is hard and soft and far more practical for the street. BKJ1216 Posted March 19, 2003 Author Posted March 19, 2003 Well thanks for your advice but I was kind of wrong with my theroy of shudokan being a lot like shotokan. I'm just going to check out both the schools. White Belt- Shudokan Karate

Shotokan did not come from Goju, they both came from Sensei Itosu. Shotokan is karate for kids........... disrepectful much! I will think you'll find that GRAND MASTER Itosu made Karate teachable to children. So they are both equally hard or easy to learn.

JohnnyS Posted March 20, 2003 Posted March 20, 2003 Sorry, I was wrong on my history. I still stand by my other comments. Goju is a much deeper art and far more practical on the street than is shotokan. BJJ - Black Belt under John Will (Machado)Shootfighting - 3rd Degree Black BeltTKD - Black Belt

Dang straight. Shotokan is corupted Shorin-ryu. Goju is avery well taught style in the US, why not take it?
