Shorinji-Kan Jiu jitsu AKA Shorinji-kempo jiu-jitsu.

I know what you mean about using strikes as a distraction. The sensei in our style are always empasise such weakeners, (my favourite is to use a knife hand blow to the floating ribs as I enter for Ippon Seoi Nage, drives the wind out of them a treat :) ) however I am also a karateka, and a fundamental principle in Karate is make every punch count, one hit one kill type thing (but not so literal). Also I think that if you do use a strike, you may as well do a good one. And few are better than gyaku.

But they do disturb the flow of the throw, meaning more muscle is required to bang the takedown in.

Just from observation I find that open hand blows can work well suck as Shoto uchi, ( a slam that one to the carotid as I use Tai-otoshi). Any thoughts?

if you watch the carlos newton vs. pele fight in pride 19 carlos does a textbook standard judo throw. they are still around. and still effective, all it takes is opportunity and the ability to see it open.

If i still have all my blood it was a good fight, if not, it was a great fight.

I dont like Tsuri komi, it requires a lot of arm strength to get their arm up, I also think it takes some time to actually proform. I much prefer Ippon Seoi Nage. As you turn in then you could apply the atemi do the throw, which is pretty powerful, then run.

Hm must have decribed the wrong throw :-? . Oh well. :D

Yes seoi nage is good, morote is useful from a choke. I use atemi on the entrance to the throw.

I dodge the incoming punch with a large step into zenkutsu dachi to the 1/2 o clock position, while blocking upwards with a rear hand age uke and striking with a knifehand to the floating ribs (guaranteed to drive the wind out when gentle, break ribs when hard). Since by arm is already beneath the armpit I just coil it round( grabbing their sleeve at the shoulder) as I turn, and over they go. Lock or strike to finish.

But I would like to apply the same (strike, thow finish to other less muscle throws. The above tactic also works for seoi otoshi.)

In the end it will comes down to which throws have you practised again again, adding strikes and against many attacks.

thats what I admire about the aikido i've seen, they learn how to apply each throw against all attacks (more or less). In my style some throws are only ever trained from specific attacks Yama Arashi from a diagonal slash etc.

What do you think of osoto otoshi, I was thinking that might be pretty applicable with the right footwork and practise.
