Having done both let me add something.

An open hand strike to the jaw is devastating (where the mandible connects to the skull). Same to the atlas of the skull. Devastating.

As to punching the head. I have yet to hit a guy in the face and hurt myself. I wouldn't punch a person in the skull though. It wouldn't accomplish anything for me, other than to perhaps disorientate the fellow. But that is ineffective and something I wouldn't do. Face and jaw are about it. The neck is altogether different and can cause lots of damage to the victim when attacked properly.

Open hand techniques are wonderful. So are closed hands. Each technique, however, will not work for every situation. You must choose the one that does what you want when you want it to. It all depends on what you plan to accomplish with your attack.

ITS NOT WHAT YOU STRIKE WITH THAT MATTERS,IT IS WHERE YOU STRIKE THEM.A OPEN HAND STRIKE CAN BE DELIVERED MUCH FASTER THAN A CLOSED FISTAND IF YOU KNOW HOW TO DELIVER THEM CORRECTLLY ,YOU WILL MINAMIZE THE DAMAGE TO YOUR HAND AS OPPOSED TO A BALLED UP FIST.

Why punch someone when their on the ground when you can just kick them

Hammer blows are good too. Open hand strikes are used along with punching both effective in the right situation. Learn both, know more.

Davison, a little to the left on your keyboard it is a knob that you can read Caps Lock on!. Hit it one time, please, coz big letters make you SCREAM on the net, and hitting the Caps Lock make the letters small again. No affence.....

Well, and my favourite strikes are OPEN hand strikes. :D

I'm faster at open hand strikes and when one can do those strikes in the correct way, fast and with "soft and hard", then the strikes are very powerful. For example, Tai Chi and Crane-style (kung-fu) have most open hand strikes, and it's really powerful, don't you think so?

Have you ever noticed how in the UFC many fights are stopped just because someone is pounding away at someones head and not the face? I guess you can win a UFC fight that way but it not real for the streets. I have personally seen a guy break his hand on a guys head. I have been hit in the head and it does hurt but it hurt the other guy more. so if you are real sure that you can hit someone in the face go for it.

You've had a 250lb brusier that wants you dead sit on top of you and just drop arms on your head and it didn't do anything?

It makes many a boxer fall unconsous, but I suppose you feel people "in the streets" are more able to take head-shots than professional boxers.

there are alot of fun techs to do with open hands: tiger claw down the face, eagle claw to the throat, figer attacks to the eyes, slicing the eyes, eye pokes, eye gouges, ripping out muscles, spear hands, chops to the side of the neck, boxing the ears, ridgehands to the temples, palm strikes to the jaw, nose, chin also fish hooking, that is a great attack, also try this combo; back fist to the head, then with the same hand reach the fingers around the back of the ear and lock the tips in the recess behind the ear where it indents and then rip forward and tear the ear off this would be a mike tyson favorite, i learned this over the summer last year in mantis kung fu
