How useful are open hand strikes really?

Recommended Posts

Once again, people this thread is for discussion and opinion NOT FOR FIGHTING.

Personally I would never use an open hand strike for anything but to eyes or throat or for throwing of balance when cornered.

Open hands in a fight I would in most circumstances use only for grabbing and pulling or when put in grappling position.

Think about it,how fast do you think you'd be able to grab a person coming at you with full out punches and strike?Very unlikely I'd say.

Only time I'd use open hand is for blocking ,grabbing or pulling shirt over a guys head while punching him,all at close range and for throwing off balance, but to think you can strike at persons neck or temples with open hand when he is punching full out, would just be plain rediculous and stupid.

In my opinion,in most cases open hand is not a good choice like most martial arts teach, because often a person who gets hold of your fingers can break them.

Conclusion:

Open hand is very limited and only good at times when grabbing ,striking to throat or eyes is needed at close range and for clinching to throw off balance.

What's every ones OPINION on this? :P

knife hand strikes can be used instead of hooks and still have tonnes of power behind them. i like to use them to targets like the jaw, temple and neck.

a few weeks back i saw a guy wearing a gum sheild get his tooth knocked out by a guy wearing hand pads, the guy had landed a reverse knife hand.

Muay thai fighter-you forget you wear gloves in your fights, take them off and you will realize many punches will result in a broken hand..

If you are punching to the head an open hand strike can be very practical. especially for hooks

Punches to hard areas such as the face with a closed fist very often result in a broken hand. Strikes to the same hard areas with something like a palm heel strike damage the targeted area without near as much damage to the knuckles.

In an earlier time that of the bare knuckle fighters, few fightes had more than one or two fights because of the damage.

Anyone who doubts the effectiveness of open hand strikes should download some Highights of Bas Rutten fighting, he has numerous KO's to both the head and body with open hand strikes.

you can download it off sherdog.com or his website..they have a link to it there also.

Closed Fists - I think they allow you to jam your wrist or break fingers way to often. Most people who just use fists train in gloves that protects the knuckle and wrist. Sparring or Fighting without a glove is completely differant.

Open Hands - Jamming fingers is the only real injury you face. I knife hand or a palm strike is just as good as a good punch IMO. They also allow you to grab and throw much quicker.

IMO only

The last thing I want to do is hit another adult male with a fist.I need my hands to work.

I know a fella who is missing a knuckle because he hit someone with his fist.

A simple little move I saw in a movie was as a jab is coming at your face.........bow your head letting their fist hit your forehead.

So I asked a fella to throw a soft jab at me & he made slight contact & started shakin his hand. It hurt him but not me.

But it look's like you got everything figured out on your own so disreguard 8)

attemting to parry, block or evade a strike would be much more prudent
