BKJ1216 Posted March 7, 2003 Posted March 7, 2003 Well I was over at my fried's house and saw him hitting the punching bag. I also saw him do a reverse punch, but instead of hitting with his fist he hit it with is palm. Does it hurt more if you hit them with the palm, or just whats the advantage of doing that? crash Posted March 7, 2003 Posted March 7, 2003 (edited) I dunno, ask the bag. j/k... it will definately hurt YOU more if you hit a heavy bag wrong from this position.(miss and push the hand/fingers too far back and uhoh.) as far as hitting someone with the heel of the palm, there are strikes and certain parts of the body that are good targets for this. KickChick Posted March 7, 2003 Posted March 7, 2003 Because contact is made using the fleshy part of the palm rather than the knuckles the risk of injury to the hand are lessened. The purpose for using this technique is to stop forward momentum. The target areas for the palm heel strike are at the chin (causing head to push back) front upper torso (you can use both hands just below shoulder)....at center of chest may cause shock, unconsciousness, trauma or even death.
monkeygirl Posted March 7, 2003 Posted March 7, 2003 The palm is naturally the hardest part of the hand. I say naturally, because the knuckles can be hardened and conditioned through training. In this way, palm striking is better for self-defense because it hurts you less. In addition to the areas that KickChick mentioned, the palm strike is also good for hitting upward on the nose. This can break your opponent's nose, but I've also heard that it is lethal (causing the nose bones to stab the brain). 1st dan & Asst. LeaF Posted March 7, 2003 Posted March 7, 2003 as others have said the palm has it's purposes. It is very difficult to punch certain parts of the body and often less effective. Just like elbows and fingers prove better for attacking certain regions so does the palm of the hand. shotochem Posted March 7, 2003 Posted March 7, 2003 The palm heel strike is also an excellent technique when you are in too close for a punch but a little too far away for an elbow strike. Its quite painful to the ribs (Ive been on the recieving end recently) Pain is only temporary, the memory of that pain lasts a lifetime.
ZeRo Posted March 7, 2003 Posted March 7, 2003 a palm heel strike, if thats what your refering to can be very powerful and destructive if used on the right targets.

Tobias_Reece Posted March 7, 2003 Posted March 7, 2003 Very good Hongkongfooi, but what has the technique description got to do with the discussion?
