From what I've heard and seen, Israeli Krav Maga is extremely effective. Originally developed by the Israeli Army for use in combat, it focuses on disarming opponents with weapons, and efficiently dispatching them afterwords.

Another incredibly brutal and effective art is Russian Combat Sambo. Focuses on attacking joints with powerful strikes and locks, intending to kill or severly injure an opponent in a minimal amount of time.

If you are worried you would face a lawsuit after destroying a would-be-mugger, you could study CDT (Control Defense Takedown), used a lot by police. It focuses on using leverage and joint locks to hold an opponent, cause him pain, but not damage him (or her, as the case may be).

Finally, from what I understand of the concepts of Jeet Kun Do (which is only a bare minimum, maybe someone could elaborate), it's focus is "Whatever works best". JKD will take moves from any style to put them together in a package that more closely suits your needs.

Krav Maga and Sambo are hard to find. JKD should be easier to find, based on the popularity of it's founder, Bruce Lee. CDT should be very easy to find, since most Police are trained in it these days.

Arguing with an engineer is like mud wrestling a pig. After a few hours, you realize they both like it.

I would suggest Krav Maga.

The problem with Brazilian JuJitsu is that it is not sufficient if there are multiple attackers. They take everything to the ground. If other people jump into the fight (which happens in real life), you don't want to be on the ground.

BJJ will tell you that 90% of all fights end up on the ground. But, 100% of all fights start standing up.

Don't get me wrong, i like BJJ - but for real life it's only good for 1 on 1 fights.

Krav Maga tries to use your natural reactions to form self defense which allows for reaction instead of thought + action.

"my art"... "no! MY art"...

This is more of a "comparitive styles" troll than anything else...

Here's what you do.. grab a phone book, look up "martial arts", call the scools you find and tell them what you are looking for. Write down the people who say "my art is good for that" and go down and see them in person. Go to theone that seems the best to you.

You should probably go down to all the dojos you have available in your area. When your talking to the instructor, take a punch at him. No actualy dont' do that. I think you should follow the advice of the people on this site and look into those arts.

agreed Krav Maga may be the best street art.

I would pick MT over BJJ only because going to the ground on the street is not a good idea.

(General George S. Patton Jr.) "It's the unconquerable soul of man, and not the nature of the weapon he uses, that ensures victory."
