BKJ1216 Posted March 5, 2003 Author Posted March 5, 2003 What do you mean by wider stance. White Belt- Shudokan Karate
rb Posted March 6, 2003 Posted March 6, 2003 on the top view of action guy take his right foot and nudge it wider in the direction toward the bottom of the screen.
SaiFightsMS Posted March 6, 2003 Posted March 6, 2003 Stand on a tile floor. Do the stance exactly the way it is shown in the picture and look at how your feet line up on the grid formed by the tiles. then take your back foot and move it 2 12 inch tile squares to your right. That is making it wider.

KickChick Posted March 7, 2003 Posted March 7, 2003 Well, listen .... we all can go back and forth here all year and we would all be right with regards to "stances". I believe what BKJ is looking for is a "basic fighting stance" .... and then again that is taught differently amongst all our styles too. Begin by turning your side to your opponent. Assuming yo are right handed, your right side should be facing forward. Your feet are shoulder width apart with your knees slightly bent. You will want your right hand held in front of you balled into a loose fist held between the eye and the mouth. The arm is in proper position when it runs the same line as the body and the elbow is kept close to the body. Styles will vary as to where to place the left hand. In some the hand is held up around the left cheek, as in a boxer’s stance. In a deeper stance..... ( if executed properly) it’s harder for your opponent to pull you off balance. You will have to make some slight adjustments here...... You take the left leg straightforward the distance of two shoulder widths. The right leg should be straight, and both feet pointed forward (as if stradling a railroad track) with the left knee bent and directly over the heel almost as if there were a steel rod driven through the knee and out the heel. Your hips and shoulders should be square with one another and back is straight. The left arm comes up in front of you. Your fist is closed and just below the eyes held parallel to the left shoulder, back of forearm and fist facing forward. The right arm is held horizontally across the body the right hand held in a fist touching the left elbow.
BKJ1216 Posted March 7, 2003 Author Posted March 7, 2003 Well has anyone seen enter the dragon? You know where they are having the competition? I'm trying to mimic that. White Belt- Shudokan Karate
delta1 Posted March 8, 2003 Posted March 8, 2003 Everything! Most stances are unstable in one direction. This one is only stable in one very specific direction. It has no mobility. The front leg is exposed and vulnerable. Because the back leg is straight, the range of his rear (right) hand is limmited. The rear hand is also limmited in offense or defense in that position. It looks like it would be difficult to get his hips into any strike or maneuver. His weight is forward, so the only foot he can kick with is the back foot, and that only a front or side kick, unless he moves and thereby telegraphs. It looks to me to be a cross between a TKD front stance and back stance. The question is, why? What are they trying to accomplish? I really see no bennifit to this stance. I sincerely hope this was an example of what not to do! If that is the case, someone did an outstanding job. Otherwise, I sincerely hope any one who attacks me in earnest studies at the school that originated that graphic! I'm curious. Where did that come from? Freedom isn't free!
