penguin540 Posted March 4, 2003 Posted March 4, 2003 i'm thinking about starting to learn to use various weapons; i was wondering what you guys think would be better or more fun to start with: nunchaku or sai (or kamas but i'm not as interested in those) thanks! red belt-American Tae Kwon Do"Men have little to fear but fear itself."
SaiFightsMS Posted March 5, 2003 Posted March 5, 2003 It would kind of depend on if you want something that is more flashy or something that has more combat oriented movements.
iolair Posted March 5, 2003 Posted March 5, 2003 Personally, I think nunchaku are too much about showing off. Oh, you didn't mention the other two traditional karate weapons: tonfa and bo. Of the five weapons, my personal order of preference would be: 1) bo 2) tonfa 3) sai 4) kama 5) nunchaku Having said that, I'd rather learn english quarterstaff than japanese bo staff.... Tonfa are very practical self defence weapons, similar to some modern police batons - they are strong for defence as well as attack. Currently: Kickboxing and variants.Previously: Karate (Seido, Shotokan, Seidokan), Ju Jitsu, Judo, Aikido, Fencing.
monkeygirl Posted March 5, 2003 Posted March 5, 2003 Nunchaku can be good to start with, because you can get padded ones! If you've never used weapons before, padded nunchaku would be a good way to get used to a weapon. They're also pretty easy to use. Bo staff is less forgiving. I've cracked myself in the head more than once during an unfamiliar kata. I have no experience with sai or tonfa to be able to tell you anything conclusive. Kama's are my favorite weapons. Most of the movements that are done (besides the rolls) closely resemble empty-hand strikes such as punches, rising blocks, down blocks, sudo stances, etc. Plus, I don't think I've ever hit my head with them...not that I remember, anyway 1st dan & Asst. Tobias_Reece Posted March 5, 2003 Posted March 5, 2003 Personally, I think nunchaku are too much about showing off. Think again my friend.Oh, you didn't mention the other two traditional karate weapons: tonfa and bo Many more 'traditional karate' weapons than this. Tonfa are very practical self defence weapons, similar to some modern police batons - they are strong for defence as well as attack. Now that I agree with. penguin540 - any weapons can be 'better' or 'fun', it just depends on what practice you put in with them. But, since you are asking, I recommend the nunchaku, because for someone like yourself the zai would probably be too boring. Tobias_Reece Posted March 5, 2003 Posted March 5, 2003 Actually sharp kama's can be very dangerous. Yup, but in the weapons circles entering a competition without sharp gama is a laughable issue. I have no idea why this is - guess its one of those big 'macho' things. But I'm a wuss, so I don't care. MWAHAHA "You Are Never Given A Dream Without Also Being Given The Power To Make It True.
