capn_midnight Posted March 6, 2003 Posted March 6, 2003 I think it's more about dedication, not what belt you are. I know a lot of blue belts that are dedicated, and know more than black belts that aren't dedicated. The line about "Learning Begins at black belt" is stupid, IMO. I think more accuratly it should be "At black belt, you learn on your own" Arguing with an engineer is like mud wrestling a pig. After a few hours, you realize they both like it.
HachiKyu Posted March 8, 2003 Posted March 8, 2003 You only start learing the art once you reach black belt IMO.i would agree thats what my sensei told me since we are following the art of traditional okinaway shotokan founded by gishin funakoshi we live by his principals in which the real training begins once you reach dan level(black belt level) Mo Duk Pai Kung fu - Green Sash (https://www.modukpai.com)Shotokan Karate - Orange Belt (https://www.nwkarate.com)Future plans - Go to a Shaolin academy.(https://www.shaolins.com)
ramymensa Posted March 8, 2003 Posted March 8, 2003 Don't wait till shodan to learn Karate It's true that a martial artist shouldn't stop at first degree BB. Then you learn some things you didn't learn previously and the tasks are more difficult. Train as if you were a BB from the first day, when you'll get there you'll be accustomed with the hard work World Shotokan Karate
SaiFightsMS Posted March 8, 2003 Posted March 8, 2003 Some times blackbelt is the line that differentiates those who wanted to get a black belt from those who are black belts. Often those who just want a black belt to have one quit at shodan. While sometimes those who are truly black belts have that commitment much earlier in their training even if they are not as gifted physically.
HachiKyu Posted March 8, 2003 Posted March 8, 2003 i would agree something me sensei told us when it was time for testing 6 months ago was that for every ten white betls theres a yellow, for every 10 yellow theres an orange and so on he was basing it on past statistics on those who truly wanted to become a black belt and those who wanted it but did not put the effort to wanting it. G95champ Posted March 8, 2003 Posted March 8, 2003 Think of it like driving in a big city. from white to black you can get arround but you still need to watch for signs and follow the main roads. Once you reach black belt you start finding new ways to get arround. Be it the subway or backroads. Pluse you can give directions if asked. (General George S. Patton Jr.) "It's the unconquerable soul of man, and not the nature of the weapon he uses, that ensures victory."
SandanPJ Posted March 9, 2003 Posted March 9, 2003 The more you learn the more you see that all the arts are from a common thread.
