I don't care where a person came from, or their training. I'll start them from "white belt" until I see that they are above that level, then I'll move them up to a level (belt) that is more suitable. I'll get "black belts" from other systems that will turn out to be totally ignorant in training. You never know what McDojo a person came from.

If I were teaching a class, and the new student was from another style, I would let them try it out for a while. After that, if they decide to stay, I would see for a time if they deserved, say a black belt. I would then decide with any other teachers whether or not they should be considered for their promotion. That is how my Sensei does it, and it works pretty well.

Actually today I have talked with students that know about the shotokan school that I have started. Apparently, when the test come, if I can demonstrate a lot of skills I may by pass the yellow belt and move on to orange. Now, I know this isn't a major move forward, but now I have a reason to train hard regardless if I fail because I will give my best.

for me it's about knowledge and achievement not the belt..if i must be a white belt so be it, but my past knowledge and achievements stay with me and belong to no one but myself.

Guru Inosanto has put on the white-belt over and over again in more than 50 martial arts. I think it's great to put the white-belt on in other martial arts and learn from the beginning. Even a different school in the same system will teach or emphasize different techniques and concepts. Nothing wrong with being a white-belt again, you'll just be a white-belt that really kicks butt.

Yes :bawling: starting on a new style is hard when you can't keep the old rank.

:angel:I have this strange idea that as part of mental training the humility of starting over as a white belt has some sort of value.

I've always been a firm believer that if you start a new style of a martial art, then you start back at white belt.

I hold a Nidan in Shotokan Karate, but if I started Goju-ryu, I would expect to start as a white belt again

I would go and wear a white belt just out of respect to the Sensei, then I would wait and let him let me know if I should wear my other colour belt!
