jiu-jitsu fighter
i studied bluer tactical confrontational management systems and i found that it was really terrible and built up a huge confidence in me that wasn't reinforced by any practical training https://www.tonyblauer.com "When we go to the ground, you are in my world, the ground is the ocean, I am the shark, and most people don't even know how to swim"
vlad_nada
guys. the original idea of martial arts was to prepare u for a real confrontation. That was the idea but in most cases not the practice. Reality fighting is as close as ur gonna get to the real thing. Its sure a hell of alot closer then waving ur hands around in katas and acting out preplanned techniques. . most of what u guys do today is for show and doesnt work in real fighting. Katas are a waste of time. All the martial artists who you would consider "martial artists" got there asses kicked in the first UFC's. Dont u guys really want to know how to fight? Anyone of the mixed martial artists today would wreck u. they train harder then anyone. most do it for a living and practice boxing, muy thai and brazilian jiu jitsu hours everyday. monkeygirl
Remember to please be respectful and not bash other styles. The original intent of this thread was to find out whether or not Reality Fighting could be considered a Martial Art. Please don't turn it into a bashing of Traditional MAs, or any other MA for that matter. Thanks 1st dan & Asst. Instructor TKD 2000-2003No matter the tune...if you can rock it, rock it hard. Kyle-san
Anyone of the mixed martial artists today would wreck u. they train harder then anyone. most do it for a living and practice boxing, muy thai and brazilian jiu jitsu hours everyday. So why should I be worried if someone who does this for a living can "wreck" me? I, personally, love just being able to practice my style and adapt it to my way of life. I'm not out to win prizes at competitions because that's only a small part of the martial arts. Unfortunately, it's the most public part of MA's so people tend to forget why they practice. shortstick
I would say that most of the UFC types, and the K-1 fighters are a highly trained, dedicated bunch. As some of you said they train for hours every day. Is it a martial art? What is the definition of a martial art? I have seen "Martial Arts" defined in so many ways in books I have read, I dont think we will ever all agree! I dont think having katas defines it, I am not sure but I dont think Jeet Kune Do has katas/forms. Training of mind body and spirit? I would say any of those guys that have stayed on top in the UFC, or K-1 for any length of time fits that idea. I think they will find thier place sooner or later under the heading of martial arts. Gandhi
I think its called Vale-Tudo (anything goes in portuguese), and yes it is a martial art as such. Kensai
Street fight is Martial Arts and Martial Arts is street fighting. Its the art of winning! I think brow beating on the part of TMAist does no good, neither does the "GET IN THE CAGE!" attitude of MMA. Kata are NEVER going to make you a great fighter, but they will give you the tools. Reflexs, balance, focus, power and fittness. They lack a true comprehension of the techniques themselves. Thats why you spar, or do resistance training. As for techniques not working, well they certainly do, its just the practioners cant get them to work. If any Karateka thinks that Itosu did kata ALL the time then they know nothing about their art. Same goes for Gen. Choi. He had his fair share of REAL confrontations and thats what made him SO good at TKD (The way it should be). TMA need full contact kumite/sanhou/sparring. If they want to be good fighters.

jiu-jitsu fighter
well when i did blauer he taught us very basic muay thai ,i mean very basic and some wrestling positioning and thats it, we practiced our shin kicks, front kicks, and punches every class and than did some ''psychology of combat" bs and that was it "When we go to the ground, you are in my world, the ground is the ocean, I am the shark, and most people don't even know how to swim"
