McKnight Posted February 28, 2003 Posted February 28, 2003 Here goes i studied shotokan karate and a kind of freestyle karate which utilized more kick moves than shotokan but i was young and impatient so i quit. Now i want to get back into Martial arts seriously but i don't know which style to choose or what are the pros and cons of each one. I don't want to do shotokan karate as i found it too set in punches. I want a style which is not too slow on the uptake effective yet not too set in one type of action e.g puches or kicks i also want a style which is adaptive to real situations. I don't mind doing multiple styles to get what i want like 2 or 3 styles at once but i want them to compliment each other or at least make up in the area which the other fails in. I also want a competitive art. The ones which are considering are: Aikido-like the whole using enemies attacks against them. Goju Ryu Karate do-heard good things about its fluidity Hapkido-like the way it mixes various styles Wing Chun- heard its a good place to start if you want to do kung fu. Could i please get your opinion on these styles and which ones i should do, any suggestions of alternative styles are welcome but could you please justify what their about are what makes it effective. Thanks a lot. Much Respect to you all. A warrior can defeat a thousand men, a thousand armies but a true warrior is one who can master himself'
TJS Posted February 28, 2003 Posted February 28, 2003 I want a style which is not too slow on the uptake effective I also want a competitive art. That rules out Aikido from you post it seem syou would enjoy a modern martial art, generally you learn them much quicker and they are more reality based. somethign like Brazilian jiu jitsu, krav maga, muay thai, judo, etc

Aikido-like the whole using enemies attacks against them. From what you've said (like using enemies attacks against them, want a competitive art), you could do a lot worse than consider Judo. If you want to be well rounded, complement it with a striking art such as Karate, Boxing or Wing Chun. Currently: Kickboxing and variants.Previously: Karate (Seido, Shotokan, Seidokan), Ju Jitsu, Judo, Aikido, Fencing.
