How many points would you give your style?

Recommended Posts

OH DO YOU MEAN THE STYLE WE ARE CURRENTLY PRACTICING?

Yes, that's what I meant - sorry, should have been clearer!

It's interesting to see different people give the same arts different scores!

Anyway, my opinion of a couple of styles I've practiced

Seido Karate (pre-black belt: weapons are introduced for black belts)

1)Ground 0

2) Throws/Takedowns 1

3) Infighting 2

4) Punching 5

5) Kicking 4

6) Weapons 0

British Judo Association

1) Ground 5

2) Throws/Takedowns 7

3) Infighting 0

4) Punching 0

5) Kicking 0

6) Weapons 0

Currently: Kickboxing and variants.

Previously: Karate (Seido, Shotokan, Seidokan), Ju Jitsu, Judo, Aikido, Fencing.

My current training (Kempo and Jujitsu... too integrated in my instruction to bother dividing them up):

1) 2 Groundwork

2) 2.5 Trapping, Throws and Takedowns

3) 2 Infighting - Elbows, Knees and Head

4) 2.5 Punching

5) 2 Kicking

6) 1 Weapons

I'd add more to some catagories but I'm all out of points.

Colored belts in Kempo and Jujitsu

I thought judo also taught striking ?

Not really. Jigoro Kano originally included striking when he formulated Judo, but generally it is restricted to being in 1 kata which is not taught before black belt.... For the average Judoka, Judo effectively has no striking.

Previously: Karate (Seido, Shotokan, Seidokan), Ju Jitsu, Judo, Aikido, Fencing.

Wado-Ryu Karate

Groundwork: 1 (occasional freestyle grappling with an 'anything that works' strategy)

Trapping, Throws and Takedowns: 3 (Hip tosses and joint locks are staples of the Kihon Kumite(pre-arranged sparring))

Infighting - Elbows, Knees and Head: 1 (We practice the techniques, but don't employ them often)

Punching: 4 (The single biggest focus of karate)

Kicking: 3.5 (Almost as important is punching, but not quite)

Weapons: 0.5 (optional training in sai, bo, shindo, etc. mostly at black belt level. Not really part of the style, but incorporated by individual teachers)
