Yeah it's weird, every martial art differs and focuses on different things and tecniques(well most of them) but they are all good and competant in their own way!

It seems that I have been playing the bad guy in this Kung fu thread. I would just like to apologise if I offended anyone - I would be offended if someone called my martial art (Karate/Kobudo) weak. Thanks for the point by TS757 - much appriciated.

Sorry guys

Tobias

Yes, everyone's entitled to their views... Censorship is a hideous blight on our glorious democratic freedoms, and anyone who advocated it should be scilenced, and all their writings burned... j/k, anyway, what I really wanted to ask was: Is Tai Chi a form of Kung Fu? I was told once it was "sort of" a style, and by other people "a warm up excersise for kung fu," though I thought it was more of its own art, adapted from various other Chinese martial arts into a sort of excersise thingy, like yoga.

that is a very good question. i dont know that much about kung fu and would like to see others perspective on that subject.

tai chi is more than likely a form of kung fu. lets see who else can reply. i will follow closely.

To all:

Taijiquan (aka - Tai Chi Ch'uan) is known as the Grand Ultimate or even the Grand Ultimate Fist Way. Taiji has roots that begin as far back as the Yellow Emperor's Medical Classic (circa 1500 B.C.) and is thought to have been developed by the Taoists. It was first heard of as Wu Dang Boxing, Wu Dang Monk Fist, and even as the 36/37 Postures. It was known in pre-Buddhist Prince Tamo China. It is not based upon animal techniques, but the 36/37 postures that can cause death went implemented correctly. Taiji is not just a bunch of movements. It does happen to be one of the oldest Chinese Martial Art systems.

Kung-Fu is not a style, but is used by some to define Martial Arts in general; or possibly just Chinese systems.

Qigong (aka - Chi Kung) is more in keeping with your qi cultivation and exercise drills.

My 2 cents.

Look for what the art can do for you and what you can do for it. A style may look bad, but you can change it to anything you want. That is why they are called arts.

There's a lot of kung Fu styles out there.. Be carefull , many people can fool you.

There aren't too many secure ways to really prove if someone is a real Kung Fu styles or its a Fake. I know about people who studies several Kung Fu styles from videos and Then come up and saying that they learned that Style from an Old Ancient master and bla, bla, bla..
