Hello,

Looking for a style to try, but I was wondering if there was a certain one my body type would be more suited for than others.

I'm thin, though not sickly. I am 6'2", about 180lbs. Not much upper body strength, but I think from the abs down I am pretty fair. As far as other sporting pursuits, I seemed to do OK with sports that had an agility component (soccer, tennis), but I don't know if I was ever super-quick or had above normal agility. I feel as though my flexibility and balance were pretty good, though.

The main thing I want out of a style would be self defense, but also a fun activity to help keep in shape with. Any suggestions?

Look into the Korean styles I say. My biased recommendation would be Hapkido, but there are others of course... take a look through the Korean Arts section.

1st Dan Hapkido

my build is extremely similar to your own, and TKD has agreed with me quite well. I have heard plenty of good things about hapkido as well. Like mentioned above, the korean arts look most suited to you.

red belt-American Tae Kwon Do

well to be honest i dont think this is what you wanna hear, but the style you would be best at is the one you like and enjoy the most. find out what arts there are around you and go have a look at them all.

Based on your body type Tae Kwon Do or another kicking-focused style would probably suit you the best. However, like a few others have said you should find the style that you enjoy the most not the one that could possibly suit your "body type".

I wouldn't choose a style that fits your body type. You shoudl choose one that you would like to do. Like me I'm average height, way a lot and i'm doing karate. I don't know if it's the style that suits me, but it's what I want to do.

well, I am about 6'3 or a little over and 195lbs, I have been very happy in TKD, I think it suits me very well. The only problem for some tall people with the long-range arts I've seen is that there is a lot more body to put out there, and so can get tired faster and maybe be a bit slower on the techniques. Myself, I have not had that problem and I've found the height to be a great advantage. But, whatever art you choose, you will adapt to that art, so I wouldn't worry about it.

Might as well take my advice--I don't use it anymore.

well, actually you can do both, take a style you like and also that fits with your body type.

Since you are tall and skinny, maybe Korean Styles can suit better.

Kickboxing can be a choice too.

But if you don't like it, its like nothing. Look for all styles, see the ones you like the most.
