In my style, Kalkinodo, it goes

White

Yellow

Orange

Green

Purple

Blue

Red

Black

Takes about two to three years to hit black...closer to three.

1st or ichii kyu is the highest kyu grade that comes before the dan or black belt grades. Kyu grades start with higher numbers and count down. Dan grades start low and count up.

The ho, shodan-ho, ranks are usually junior black belts.

I think the colors have pretty much been established. I see that some have more and some have less but it seems that the basics are always there in some form:

White

yellow/gold

orange

green

blue

brown

black

Why do they start light and get darker?

Why do they start light and get darker?

Some styles use the explaination that it signifies the dirtying (darkening) of a white belt that comes with experience and training.

At my Karate school it goes as follows....

White-1 or 2 stripes depending on how fast you progress.

Yellow

Orange

Green

Blue

Purple

4th brown

3rd brown

2nd brown

brown

red-40 teaching hours or something like that

black-and so on

So money and time play a big part in belt progression as well
