Kyle-san Posted March 20, 2003 Posted March 20, 2003 We study mantis boxing at my club. white black Hah, that's the way it should be.
Ohtar Posted March 21, 2003 Posted March 21, 2003 In Kyokushinkai karate, the ranking system is like this: 11th kyu-white 10th kyu-orange 9th kyu-orange 8th kyu-blue 7th kyu-blue 6th kyu-yellow 5th kyu-yellow (that's me) 4th kyu-green 3rd kyu-green 2nd kyu-brown 1st kyu-brown (For junior students, it's often five stripes on each belt, in the same order as the belt colours) black nidan, shodan, etc. I think it's strange orange and blue is before yellow. Does anybody know why it's like this? (I think I'd better ask this on the karate part) Where will you run when the earth becomes your enemy?

SaiFightsMS Posted March 22, 2003 Posted March 22, 2003 To be honest for kyu or gup grades I feel it is more useful for people to state what numerical kyu or gup they are instead of the color of the belt given the great range in the order of color belts in different schools.
Iron Fist 05 Posted March 22, 2003 Posted March 22, 2003 Wow! man that's a lot of different belt rankings. American Society of Karate goes like: YOUTH white yellow orange green blue purple (3levels of purple) red (3 levels of red) When a youth is old enough to go into the adults' class, he starts over at adult white no matter what rank they are. ADULTS white yellow orange green blue purple brown (3 levels of brown) black (7 levels of black) "By the time I was fifteen, I became a white belt."
Kyle-san Posted March 22, 2003 Posted March 22, 2003 When a youth is old enough to go into the adults' class, he starts over at adult white no matter what rank they are. So it completely ignores any achievement made before you become a legal adult?
hobz Posted March 22, 2003 Posted March 22, 2003 When a youth is old enough to go into the adults' class, he starts over at adult white no matter what rank they are. So it completely ignores any achievement made before you become a legal adult? I agree, that is completly ridiculous, I am new to karate, but, those kids earned their belts, it's not like they stole them.. Rule #1: Play the game to the limit. Damn the consequences.
BKJ1216 Posted March 22, 2003 Posted March 22, 2003 I think it's kind of stupid that some dojos require you to be 16 before you are able to reach shodan. White Belt- Shudokan Karate
ninjanurse Posted March 22, 2003 Posted March 22, 2003 When a youth is old enough to go into the adults' class, he starts over at adult white no matter what rank they are. At what age are they old enough? Some schools have jr programs for 4-7 that only cover basic techniques and teach balance skills, etc. Then, starting at white in an adult program isn't that big a deal.
