jiu-jitsu fighter Posted February 19, 2003 Posted February 19, 2003 when did you guys start mixing in advanced techniques into your arsenal, like i have been studying bjj for 5 months and only now am i incorporating some advanced stuff, how bout you guys? "When we go to the ground, you are in my world, the ground is the ocean, I am the shark, and most people don't even know how to swim"
Dober Posted February 19, 2003 Posted February 19, 2003 What do you consider advanced? White Belt - Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
Kensai Posted February 19, 2003 Posted February 19, 2003 Advanced?! Whats that? I dont get to do any "advanced" Aikido until 1st Dan. Like Dober said it really depends on what you think is advanced. Are you thinking arm bars, leg locks and chokes? Or moves from more diffcult positions?
ZeRo Posted February 19, 2003 Posted February 19, 2003 resently ive started to "improvise" abit more when grappling. ive been working with the position im in rather then trying to get into a different one. (if you get me)
jiu-jitsu fighter Posted February 19, 2003 Author Posted February 19, 2003 ok zero, but are you in a dominant position, if not you should get into one, by advanced i mean kneebars, heel hooks, clock chokes, um.......transition fron triangle to armbar is another one.............spider guard i just started using stuff other than the basics "When we go to the ground, you are in my world, the ground is the ocean, I am the shark, and most people don't even know how to swim"
ZeRo Posted February 19, 2003 Posted February 19, 2003 im in a position i feel comfortable in. i used the spider guard for the first time today, put some dude into an bicep lock.
jiu-jitsu fighter Posted February 19, 2003 Author Posted February 19, 2003 nice,, i have been using spider guard alot but only as a transitional thing, i use it to defend against the guy from passing my guard , "When we go to the ground, you are in my world, the ground is the ocean, I am the shark, and most people don't even know how to swim"
Mr Heel Hook Posted February 20, 2003 Posted February 20, 2003 (edited) Your question to me is kinda weird. I don't think I ever chose a time to start using more advanced techniques. For me, they were taught to me and I just started to use them when the opportunity popped up. I think in learning Jiu Jitsu, people slide past the "basics" to quickly because they get caught in the glamor of catching people with more advanced submissions. Everything you ever learn will stem from your tutelage of basics that have been taught to you. Not to say I am saying you are skipping anything, it's just something I notice amongst beginners of BJJ. A lot of times people will break out in discussions of more advanced attacks they have picked up, but 9 times out of ten they never catch anyone with them while rolling. I can't help but think it's because they move past the basics thinking they have learned them to their fullest. Helio Gracie himself said the basics, if mastered, will give you the ability to compete with anyone you come across. Sometimes his words are funny, at a seminar I was at he spoke about the guard and how people should become more attempt at it. He said once you can hold your guard against everyone in your class have others try to break it from other schools. Then, when you get past that, have everyone in your city try. Once you pass that, maybe you should try everyone in your state. At first I thought he was kidding...but he wasn't. He was making the point I am. Don't rush past the basics until you have truly mastered them. And, when you feel you have, don't forget them. Edited February 20, 2003 by Mr Heel Hook "A deer admires a lion. But all the members of our family are lions. So it doesn't matter which lion I admire. " -Rener Gracie-
yellowsnow Posted February 20, 2003 Posted February 20, 2003 I don't think anyone below a really advanced blue or purple belt should be performing leg locks or heel locks whatever at full speed while rolling...too dangerous... also, what do you consider advanced??? YS
jiu-jitsu fighter Posted February 20, 2003 Author Posted February 20, 2003 heel hook i know that thank you,, i am taught new techniques almost every class and when we aren't learning new techniques we're practicing the old ones, its just i have added a few kneebars and the heel hook to my arsenal plus a bunch of gi chokes and stuff at my academy the blue belts have actually defeated purple belts from other schools on several occasions so , and they know alot of stuff, i understand that the basics are extremely important ,but you also need to have a well rounded arsenal, and that must include leg locks , even if the guy is a "beginner" "When we go to the ground, you are in my world, the ground is the ocean, I am the shark, and most people don't even know how to swim"
