Boxing for self defense

Recommended Posts

Hi! I'm new here and I had a very brief history in the martial arts, and what I learned was not worth the short amount of time I spent there. Anyway, I was wondering if any of you would consider boxing as a good martial art for self defense. I have cerebral palsey so I can't use my feet for self defense very well so thought that boxing would be good for someone like me. What's your opinion (whoever you are)?

No and here is why...

Boxers tend to throw bad punches. Meaning the don't learn how to hit with a bare fist. Because they train with 16oz gloves on. These gloves protect the hands. The Ring and Little finger break really eaisy. This is why you see MA only hit with the 2 big knuckles.

If you can find a boxing teacher who teaches boxing for SD and shows you hot to protect your hands then ok. However because of the gloves most teach the Hook Punch with the contact being the oustide of the hand which really puts the hand in danger of breaking if you strike something hard without the padding of gloves.

This is not to put boxing down just the fact that it builds confidence that is not there because of the use of gloves in training that you won't have in a SD event.

Yeah, I think boxing would be a good investment. Although, the hip rotation is the main part of where your power comes from, so you may still have a hard time with boxing.

There are always two choices, two paths. One choice is easy and its only reward is it's easy.

It takes sacrifice to be the best.

I don't think Shotokan is a good idea if he's got problems with the feet, because this style is very demanding on the lower part of the body.

You could do boxing and try to train when you get the occasion without gloves. Punch the bag barehanded with the first 2 knuckles. You'll learn to do it properly.

when it comes to do a MA or not, I guess it's the first answer .. Do ..

Maybe other members here could advise you regarding their own styles.

definately go with boxing, even tho' they train with gloves. i always felt that if you hit someones face hard enuf to break a knuckle then the fight might very well be over with that.

What about finding a style that teaches cane? Also find a school that is willing to modify techniques in an effective way for you. IMO if they can't (or won't) then they don't get what self-defense is about and are too narrow minded to waste your time with!
