Lord Deckard Posted February 10, 2003 Posted February 10, 2003 First post! Just started Lau Gar and only had 2 lessons. It`s a small class so I`m picking it up OK but does any one have any tips or pointers? I`m exercising and practicing every day (time & wife permitting!) but I`d like to study the history and the movements in more detail. Does any one have any good web links or the titles of any books I should track down? Thanks in advance! Lord Deckard
jak675 Posted February 12, 2003 Posted February 12, 2003 Hello, Like I have seen and my teacher stresses, basics are the foundation which can lead to higher levels. Remember that when you are getting bored doing the same exercises over and over or feel you are not progressing fast enough. Real power and skill takes time, dedication, and lots of hard work to develop. Oh, and by the way, have fun! Joe

jmd161 Posted April 26, 2003 Posted April 26, 2003 Lau Gar is part of Other systems in the U.S. It's not taught as a seperate style here.I learned one of the fist sets about 10 yrs ago in my old style of kung fu. You must be living in England to have a chance to learn Lau Gar style. That's the only place i know where it's still taught as a whole style.Lau Gar uses the Tiger Claw alot from the form i learned ,and from other forms i've seen.Lau Gar is not a big system ,but is very effective. That's why it was picked up by Hung Gar. I knew a site that had all Lau Gar forms on video clips that you could watch ,but they took them off because of so much traffic to the site. Lau Gar forms are short compared to Hung Gar forms, but Lau Gar forms require tension while doing them so you will be very tired and sweaty after doing one form.It will take some time before you can do a entire form without stopping to rest. jeff The Basics Are The Hidden Secret To Kung Fu Master The Basics.
paolung Posted April 27, 2003 Posted April 27, 2003 my suggestion would be to ask your sifu about the history and for some book recommendations. sometimes different branches have differing versions of history. this doesn't make any branch necessarily more legitimate, just different... good luck and train hard!
