jmy77 Posted February 10, 2003 Posted February 10, 2003 (edited) Just a question. I was wondering if anyone could enlighten me on Catch Wrestling. I have never heard of it until I came across Matt Furey's Websites. I was on my wrestling team in high school (Greco Roman) but that was short lived (the coach sucked all of the fun out it.) I am wondering how the two styles are similar and where they differ. Any and all help (info, opinions, websites) is much appreciated... Ps. I am new to the forum so if this has been before, I apologize. Edited February 10, 2003 by jmy77 "Don't hit at all if it is honorably possible to avoid hitting; but never hit soft." - Pres. jmy77 Posted February 11, 2003 Author Posted February 11, 2003 Thank you, SubmissionFighter. That is a great website. Does anyone here actually train and study Catch Wrestling? Has anyone competed against/fought a Catch Wrestler? If so (and even if you haven't), what are your opinions of it... Which would you believe to be a more effective style Catch or BJJ or Judo, etc.? I ask because I don't know... "Don't hit at all if it is honorably possible to avoid hitting; but never hit soft." - Pres. jiu-jitsu fighter Posted February 11, 2003 Posted February 11, 2003 i competed against a catch wrestler, tough opponent but , he needed to work more on his submissions they were a bit ,you could say unreliable "When we go to the ground, you are in my world, the ground is the ocean, I am the shark, and most people don't even know how to swim"
Karateka_latino Posted February 12, 2003 Posted February 12, 2003 I haven't trained or compete against it, but it looks a cool grappling system to learn from. Its just too tough to find a person who actually Knows that rare grappling style.
jmy77 Posted February 12, 2003 Author Posted February 12, 2003 Yeah. There are no Catch Schools/Gyms that I have heard of anywhere, let alone on Long Island. Around here Karate and Jiu Jitsu reign, there are a few TKD schools. I only found one BJJ school, which is too far from my home. (Never really looked for Aikido or Kung Fu.) I guess for now I will stick with what my instructors teach in ground fighting (which is mostly how to get off the ground as fast as possible using counters and reverses - we do learn some jiu jitsu.) I was looking for an uncommon ground style to complement my Kenpo. Has anyone actually used videos to learn a style? I would imagine it being kind of unfruitful without a knowledgeable instructor physically showing you. "Don't hit at all if it is honorably possible to avoid hitting; but never hit soft." - Pres. Karateka_latino Posted February 13, 2003 Posted February 13, 2003 Why don't you join to a jiu jitsu school then? or look for a Judo school? learn the basics first with an instructor before you even try to learn grappling from videos. Even if you video-train you still must be in a School so you can roll (spar), Ground grappling needs a lot of sparring to be learned well. With videos you may learn the moves, by rolling you'll learn how to use them. ALSO, you can get in touch with the Brazilian jiu-jitsu school and ask them when they'll have seminars, then you travel to the school and learn the basics with an instructor. If you want to learn Catch wrestling techniques from videos, then i suggest you look as a base Grappling style Wrestling (freestyle/grecoroman) because that's basically what Catchwrestling is, Submission Wrestling. hope this helps
omnifinite Posted February 13, 2003 Posted February 13, 2003 In grappling the difference between a technique working and not working can be a couple inches. A video might not tell you that kind of thing. 1st Dan HapkidoColored belts in Kempo and Jujitsu
jmy77 Posted February 13, 2003 Author Posted February 13, 2003 Thank you, both. I will most likely end up at a jiu jitsu school. Was just interested in Catch Wrestling and if anyone has tried to learn anything from just using videos. Thanks again for your input.
