Well John Van Weenen's book called "The Beginner's Guide to Shotokan Karate" is interesting reading. I guess its more useful to Kyu grades, but I suppose there's a few pages that could be of interest to dan graders.

 

Another book I liked was "Myths and Legends of the Martial Arts" by Peter Lewis. Its just a bit of light reading, but I enjoyed it.

Smile. It makes people wonder what you've been up to.

The "Book of Five Rings" by Miyamoto Musashi is a great book on strategy. It consists of the "ground book", "water book", "fire book", "wind book", and the "book of the void". It was written in 1645 by Master Musashi, it's pretty deep but some good reading. The best thing is you can read it online if you want. Here's the link:
