my trainner keeps on yelling at me because i flare out my elbows when i throw a left jab or right straight. I don't understand how to correct these problems. We probably sat there for about fourty five minutes in a private lesson going over this and i left not feeling any better about it. He's telling me to keep my elbows tight to my body and punch like i was going to do a close grip bench press, then turn it over at the end like screwing a screw driver. Are there any picks on the web that someone could link me to so i can get this right, and move on. Its extremely frustrating when i can not figure something out. Thanks in advance!

Granted, I only instruct a (cardio) kickboxing class, but I do follow the same basic kb basics which is when you jab elbows are tucked in close to body to avoid irritation of the rotator and deltoid muscles which also adds to power in the punch. But also keeping your elbows close especially afer delivering the jab/punch protects your ribs.

This is an "ok" site where you can move your mouse over pic to see jab video...

what our instructor makes us do when we're being slack with our elbows is make us hold some focus mitts on both sides, between our elbow and rib cage, therefore keeping your elbows tucked right. you drop the mitts - 20 push ups.

either that, or our instructor will just punch us (lightly) in the ribs if we still haven't got it. you'll *learn* to keep your elbows close to your body.
