Kirves Posted February 4, 2003 Posted February 4, 2003 I must add a disclaimer though: when I say "over half the training should be applications, not solo performance shadow boxing", I mean in the advanced levels. Beginners need to get the "kihon" or basic technique dynamics down first. Then at a later stage you can get to advanced applications. So, if you are just a yellow belt in a karate school and don't seem to get that much focus on the applications of the kata, don't just quit, you aren't supposed to learn them yet.
SaiFightsMS Posted February 4, 2003 Posted February 4, 2003 Kirves I really like your response to this thread. The only thing I could possibly add is that when you think you see what kata is about the next day you see how much more there is you haven't tapped into yet. I don't think it is possible to know all there is about even a single kata or it's use.
BlueDragon1981 Posted February 4, 2003 Posted February 4, 2003 Kata can be useful...mainly because it teaches you technique...this technique can become second nature if practiced enough....if you keep your mind open it won't restrict you to anything.... just allow for you to react to something with better instincts.
