I want to buy a BJJ Gi, i was just checking out some Machado's Gi and i found that there is one gi that they say "for competition" (i think it was a gold or a hybrid weave), so, my question is, can i enter in a tournament with a single weave for example?

Thanks,

i want it not to tear, but also it be light and not a heavy thing.

Here are the link to compare the weave of each one:

I think when they say "for competition", they mean for it to be your special tournament gi, as in one you keep "special", just for tournaments. Often times, people don't want to compete in the same faded and worn gi that they train in. So, they keep special tournament uniforms so that they always look crisp and new. Perhaps by having a gi made from a high quality fabric, they feel luckier...

Anyway, I think it's just a marketing ploy.

I have no personal experience in BJJ, but I've never heard of any tournaments of any style disqualifying people because they weren't wearing the right weight of gi. Now, if you show up in something tie-dyed, then maybe... ;)

Just make sure you don't shave your eyebrows into a thin line; they'll disqualify your for that in Japan

I wouldn't if I was you. And yes, Royce does wear a single weave but would do so in sport jiu Jitsu. I have actually spoken a bit to him about it. The reason I wouldn't has nothing to do with if it will tear or not, but to do with someone can get a handful of your Gi. A single weave, you can actually grab both lapels in one hand. In my opinion, it is a bad handicap and I myself have taken advantage of it several times.

It's not a matter of if it will tear or not, it's just much easier to use against someone.

It certainly isn't a marketing ploy. There is a distinct advantage in it. Grabbing my Gi is a very hard thing to do because of how it's made.

So I say again: Bad Idea, you can be controlled with it too easily. :brow:
