Kirves Posted January 29, 2003 Posted January 29, 2003 Just for those really interested, the link below is a small booklet about the fighting techniques that are taught and trained to everyone in the Finnish military. This is not all that is taught to professionals, but all those Finnish males who don't have a medical reason for not to do their service for the country, are taught and trained in at least these techniques, i.e. all adult males in Finland have had some training in the moves shown in the booklet. Sorry the text is all in Finnish, but there are some pictures. As anyone can see, there are very few techniques and they are quite basic but they are trained in a really alive manner and that's good. I myself was an MP team leader and we MPs got a whole lot more CQC training than what's in the booklet shown here (hey, we had to be able to control the rest of the soldiers! ) http://www.mil-liikunta.net/pdf/itsepuolustus.pdf
LOILOI44 Posted January 30, 2003 Posted January 30, 2003 Kirves, good link. It looks like some real basic stuff that will work. Too bad I can't read Finnish.
Kirves Posted January 30, 2003 Author Posted January 30, 2003 Kirves, good link. It looks like some real basic stuff that will work. Yeah, it's nice to know the enemy. In Finland, every male does a military service (well, some don't serve but that's another story) and thus every adult male on the streets has some training. The methods on the booklet are barebone minimum of course, usually the instructor is a martial artist and adds some of his own to the syllabus. Some special forces are exclusively trained in Krav Maga, and professional soldiers often get Hokutoryu Jujutsu training. What I like about the training, is that it trains these basic techniques in a good live manner, lots of sparring and action with mits and pads. You can go far with little basics when the training methods are good.
Fenris-wolf Posted June 17, 2003 Posted June 17, 2003 This is sort of peripheral, but... You know, I find that a little disturbing. It means every would-be rapist on the street knows just that little bit more than they would otherwise. ie: every male in Finnland knows how to fight to some extent or another Let Us Turn The Jump Rope In Accord With Socialist Principles!
Kirves Posted June 17, 2003 Author Posted June 17, 2003 (edited) Women are free to go to the army if they choose to. Few do though. And I'd recommend a martial arts class for them anyway. But you are right, the male population do have that advantage. Luckily, it also means that any guy happening to be around to help, has also gotten similar training. But, usually Finns do their service around the age of 20 (19 being the "standard" age of starting) and if one doesn't train anything after the service, the skills will diminish eventually. And if someone is really serious about doing something that evil, he can just as well bring a knife... Edited June 17, 2003 by Kirves
Martial_Artist Posted June 17, 2003 Posted June 17, 2003 I don't find that disturbing at all. It just means that for every would-be rapist there are 10x as many good guys. It also means to any invading force that the whole country is a force to reckon with and not just a standing army. Yes, if someone is really intent on doing evil not too much to stop them but better people.
