Neil Posted January 25, 2003 Posted January 25, 2003 Has anyone got any information on the Okinawan Warriors? Are there any books available on them or any good websites giving a good in depth history on them. regards, Neil
Kirves Posted January 25, 2003 Posted January 25, 2003 On Okinawa, the title 'bushi' didn't have the same meaning it had in Japan. An Okinawan bushi was a respected gentleman, a man people looked up to. He was as known for his scholar work and helping the village as he was for being a fighter. He didn't follow a 'bushido' code, nor did he walk around with swords thinking he's somehow a higher being than the common folk. An excellent book to read is this: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0804820899/ref=pd_sim_books_2/103-7913715-9529456?v=glance&s=books
hobbitbob Posted January 27, 2003 Posted January 27, 2003 By Mark Bishop: Secrets of Okinawan Karate By Nagamine Shoshin: Tales of Great Okinawan Masters. Also, read Dragon Times (it's changing its name to "Classical Martial Arts"), which is a scholarly journal that deals with Okinawan and Japanese Karate. There have always been Starkadders at Cold Comfort Farm!
