update : we had a big storm at the weekend (hurricane force winds) and it ripped the roof off my otuside cabin that i use for a gym. Managed to bring some stuff inside (ski machine, weight plates etc)

  • Glad to know that you’re ok, DP. Material things can be replaced but lives can’t be replaced.

That foot pain is a bummer. Do you think its gout? Have you had it checked out? Good to see you working around it.

I was curious, in your BJJ sessions, do you work takedowns very much, or do you tend to start on the floor?

yeah it is gout - i broke my foot years ago sparring with my then instructor and i get gout in that joint. Usually manage to keep it controlled but the odd flare up happens unfortunately.

BJJ wise it varies tbh depending who i am training with and on the space. We do work in standing grip fighting as part of warm ups in most classes though. If i am unsure of the person or if i think the fact i am a decent amount bigger will make it unfair then i prefer to start on the floor and i will typically pick bottom closed guard. I make it a personal rule to do that as then if i get on top i have earned it and i don't need to feel bad about smashing someone smaller for a round!

I hope to be able to get good enough that I can sacrifice positions knowing I can confidently work to improve them. A rule I made for myself in warmup rounds is to not try to submit my partner. I just try to work through positions, either maintaining a dominant position or improving position. If I find a sub opportunity, I'll try to get to it without setting it, and continue the roll.

What grips would you typically recommend for gi training? What grip positions do you find the most success with?
