Karate session

Really good session this one. After the warm ups the entire session was dedicated to bunkai with some practical stuff being covered. Enjoyed it though i am not a fan of takedowns on solid sports hall floors!

update : we had a big storm at the weekend (hurricane force winds) and it ripped the roof off my otuside cabin that i use for a gym. Managed to bring some stuff inside (ski machine, weight plates etc)

  • Glad to know that you’re ok, DP. Material things can be replaced but lives can’t be replaced.

I agree, that's terrible.  Sorry to hear this, but glad you and your family are ok.

Karate double session

Did two classes here back to back (regular and 'advanced' class). Main focus for both was kumite drills. First class we were focusing on drills for responding to opponents movements and following them and also some reaction target drills for punching then did some light hands only kumite. Second class we worked on some closer range kumite drills with the focus being on all movement to be in yori ashi or 'skipping' footwork range and constant reactions: one person strikes, opponent blocks and immediately counters, first person blocks and immediately counters etc. Was really good drill and i can definitely see the benefits that would come from it

Wednesday 1st July

Karate Session

Usual warm ups and then a very kata focused session which was great! We worked on Bassai Dai, Kanku Dai, Enpi, Jion, Kanku Sho and Bassai Sho. First time i had ever tried any of these other than Bassai Dai (though i had been self learning Kanku Dai). Was particularly useful due to the change in clubs from a few months ago : my old association you only required Bassai Dai for Shodan grading and Kanku Dai, Enpi and Jion were taught at Shodan (alongside Jitte and Hangetsu). For my new association i can still grade using Bassai Dai but we are also supposed to know Kanku Dai, Enpi and Jion at all the brown belt grades as we get to pick one of those 4 to grade with.

The sensei mentioned that he likes people to know 3 of the 4 when they pass shodan just to make their life easier on their road to Nidan. Now that i have learnt Kanku Dai (though it needs a lot of work still!) i think i will try to work on Jion to make my 3
