Back in Oct. of last year a North Korean Taekwon-Do delegation visited South Korea. The leader of the delegation, Chairman of the North Korea Taekown-Do Committee, Mr. Hwang and the members of the delegation (comprised of 13 male and 8 female martial artists) were warmly welcomed by the president of the South Korea Taekwondo Association and their people.

They successfully impressed everyone with their demonstration. The performance was comprised of patterns, sparring, special techniques, breaking and self defense.

A North Korean manager of the group explained that the practitioners of Taekwon-Do in North Korea have kept the traditional techniques of the art. Their sparring looks like actual fighting. Knees and elbows can be weapons. He explained that South Korean Taekwondo is one of sports now, but ITF is one of the martial arts.

If you are interested in viewing two movies which show the demonstration of this North Korean ITF team ...you can go to

Nice videos and seems awful lot of acrobatics to be "more martial". I never understood teaching high, flying, spinning, etc, kicks for self defence. Especially if their agenda is to state their style is not sport but more martial and realistic. The videos were nice to see but left me confused. :-?

Are they going to finally unify TKD into one style??

Well, it is the goal of Chang Ung to gain recognition of the IOC for the ITF and to negotiate with the WTF for participation of its members in the 2004 games in Greece .... and to eventually unite the ITF and WTF.

Dr. Yong Kim (pres. of WTF) agreed that the WTF should support the ITF's participation in the Olympics.... (so this may be the first step)....

There is a famous Korean quote : "impossible is not a Korean word".

Bear in mind Kirves that the videos are from a "demonstration" ... merely to be impressive (as I believe it was you cannot deny that fact)...

They can kick "high" .. because they "can" :o

Sure, I was impressed, "Wow, great circus!", but I wasn't impressed in the way the text implied, i.e. "Wow, great martial artists!". But that's just me with my background. One man's opinion only. I have seen demonstrations were I was impressed about the martial skill, not the acrobatic skill of the demonstrators, but as I said this is just my opinion, and hey - what do I know?
