I bet Wing Chun would be good for you. I don't know it especially well but I believe it's very practical, kata-less, and won't infringe on your belief system.

Well, there aren't kata in WC because kata is a Japanese word ;) but if we're talking about long solo forms, then you are mistaken, WC has them. Several of them, usually consisting of more than hundred movements each. It also has lots of Chi involvement, though as my other post already suggests, they don't try to do magic with it.

my 5 goals and reasons for taking a martial art are as follows.

#1 obtain a practicle means of self defence usefull in all most any situation.

#2 Reduce Anxiety and Panic (learn to relax and breath right and get good work out)

#3 build self confidence

#4 I want an art that would not hand me a black belt in under 2 years. I want to REALLY have to work to acheive my goal.

#5 NO or as little to do with training chi or ki :)

You see guys and gals it is odd. I was raised highly Christian and I know that martial arts do not go against it. I know for a fact BUT when people start debating like that one thread where some guy was listing links to some pastor saying all MA were evil it scares me.

Logicly I know that this is just a man saying things that he has no proff of and I do not beleive that god has any objection to me learnign self defence but like I said I was raised so obssesivly Religous that like to even be in or around a debate like that one threat adds great anxiety for me.

At this point I am not sure what I want. In the Chico Ca area I am moving to They do have a Kuk Sul Do School that I was very interested in. I do like that it is a hard soft style consiting of breaking and power as well as relaxing soft movment.

Here Guys I will post a link to the list of schools in the area I am moving and you guys letm e know your thoughts. I am mainly considering Judo/jui jitsu, Aikido, Kuk Sul Do.

This link will show you all schools I have the choice of. :) Thansk everyone!

Most Aikido styles incorporate some Ki training. So perhaps its not for you.

However Judo does not emphasis it so much.

But good luck in your search.

I just talked to a place that teaches Kodenkan Jujitsu. I talked to a woman that I beleive is the head instructor. She has been in the art for 25 years and is a black belt of some kind but I forgot what dan.

All my knowlege thus far on Jui Jitsu has been from BJJ and the gracies. It was my understanding that there was no striking trained in jui jitsu but she explained that traditionaly there are! She explained how when Jui jitsu was taken to Brazil they only tought to a cetain level then the gracies took the grapplign and perfected it but they did not learn past that.

She seemed very informed on martial arts and basically all asian culter and history. It sounds great and I think I will be trying it. She said that Aikido stems directly from Jui Jitsu and that all the joint locks and take downs come from jui jitso. Does this sound right?

They do full sparring like BJJ. They do not have single person Katas which I am happy about. It sounds VERY well rounded and not too rooted in Ki or Chi. Any thoughts or experience with this art?

I will be checkingit out. The only reason I ask all this is because I do not livei n the area yet and am only going on phoen conversations with the people :)

Don't believe everything "some pastor" says. There are pastors who say to children "Don't tell your mama what we do here in private, ok?", others say the end of the world is coming and they should all buy Nike sneakers and go to a secluded place and kill themselves.

That's true, I remember seeing video of one of those solo forms now. Brain fart I guess :). Ok, Wing Chun is off my recommendation list.

If for self-defense purposes you might want to thin twice before starting Aikido. From what I've seen it takes quite a while to be able to "kick-ass" within Aikido. If you have no problem with that then go right ahead.

If you want to take two styles at the same time then you have to realize that doing one will intefer in doing the other (for most people). One more thing, there are many different styles of Aikido, make sure you know which one is best for you.

I thinkI have settled on Kodenkan Jujitsu. Sounds like the perfect ma for me. Thus far anyway. I cannot check out the classes until I get up there though

I have noticed that too.

If you're looking to get in shape and learn to "lay someone out", boxing is the way to go.

I know you don't want to get hit, but in reality, no fighting discipline you can train in for years and never take flush punch to the face can really do you a whole lot of good in the streets.

You have your odd 80 year old sensei that can do push-ups on one finger, but no Martial art will get you in to the kind of shape that boxing will.

As for street fighting, it's not so much the technique that will help you, but being used to being in a fighting situation and being strong and in shape.

Also, you never know how good you'll be until you try and apply yourself. You may have talent, and be able to have a serious career. Don't get your hopes up tho.
