eyeball-san Posted January 13, 2003 Posted January 13, 2003 I used to take kenpo lessons years ago, but have not trained in nearly 10 years. I recently began taking classes in Okinawan Shuri Ryu. My sensei trains under Hanshi Robert Bowles, and used to train under the late Hanshi John Pachivas. Both are of the six chief instructors chosen by the late Grandmaster Robert Trias. I am greatly honored to be so high up in the lineage of such a wonderful martial art. Heres my problem. Shuri Ryu uses japanese terminology and I'm having a hard time retaining new terms after only hearing them in class. Can anyone lead me to a comprehensive resource where I can actually read these terms and their definitions? A Shuri Ryu dictionary would be nice. I know I can obtain a copy of a book written by Grandmaster Trias from his daughter but they are $90 + s&h. I really am only concerned with the lingo, I can remember the physical parts of training well so I don't need the entire textbook just yet.
SaiFightsMS Posted January 14, 2003 Posted January 14, 2003 Are you looking for the terms in Japanes or Okinawan? There is a difference.
eyeball-san Posted January 14, 2003 Author Posted January 14, 2003 You stumped me there. Good question, I will try to find out.

gheinisch Posted January 14, 2003 Posted January 14, 2003 Hello EyeBall San, My Hanshi trained under Master Pachivas and had the opprotunity to work with Master Trias as well. Our style of Hon-Shin-Do has old roots in Okinawan Shorie-Ryu. A great deal of the terminology we use in class is traditional. Here are a couple of sites that might be helpful, a lot of the terms are very similar if not exact to what we use. I hope this helps! http://www.thekaratedirectory.com/articles/terminology.htm#Z http://www.karateplanet.com/all_pages/members/pages/i1_1.asp Gheinisch "If your hand goes forth withhold your temper""If your temper goes forth withold your hand"-Gichin Funakoshi

As I was surfing around today I found a couple pretty good term lists on some Shorin Ryu sites. They should be pretty accurate as well. So who do you train under? I train under Sensei Michael Mattingly. I met Hanshi Robert Bowles and Hanshi Herb Johnson (Shorei Goju) at a local tournament last month. I was amazed at the number of students in attendence. I only started training again in October but I think I can get my yellow belt before summer. Sensei also teaces us advanced techniques but he isn't trying to rush us through the belts. It's all coming back to me now.
SaiFightsMS Posted January 15, 2003 Posted January 15, 2003 If you use a pda there is also a program floating around with karate terms in it. I had it on mine for a while but when I discovered I wasn't using it I took it off to make space for something else. http://www.beiks.com/palmzonebg/bdictyen.htm
gheinisch Posted January 15, 2003 Posted January 15, 2003 Hello Eyeball-San, We train under Hanshi Leo Kozloski (9th degree) at the U.S. Christian Academy of Martial Arts he started at our church. He was the founder of the U.S. Academy of Martial Arts but got out of teaching for a while until Master Pachivas passed away and he felt a calling to start teaching again. What's so great is he teaches at our church (he is also a member) and charges nothing for the classes. My son and I started a little over three years ago and just love it. He is a great guy as well as a great teacher! We feel very fortunate to have him. We do have a web site if you want to check it out. It has Hanshi's history as well as a lineage tree and other stuff. I also posted a picture on the forums web site under dojo pics. Here's the link to our site http://www.crossroadsnewnan.org/ Just click on the Martial Arts link on the left. Good talking to you, keep up the hard work. I think yellow was my hardest belt to promote from! eyeball-san Posted January 18, 2003 Author Posted January 18, 2003 I read that info on Master Leo. Small world. I lived in Hollywood, FL also. 91-94. Hollywood was great, I didn't really care for most of Miami or Ft. Lauderdale though. Decided Indiana wasn't so bad after all, no 30 mile wide hurricanes to deal with here.
gheinisch Posted January 20, 2003 Posted January 20, 2003 It truely is a small world. It's amazing how many paths of other people we cross on any given day. I've lived in Georgia all my life, can't say I blame you for getting away from those hurricanes and calling Indy home. I know you said that you just started training again, is kata a big part of your training? We do kata often. Leo says "so me someone who does kata well and they will also be a good karateka". It is very helpful in perfecting techniques. I know some here do not like kata but I feel they are the bases of what we do.
