It seems like every martial artists dream, to live and work at a dojo in Japan. I’d love to do this at a Shorin Ryu or Goju place. Although I’m sure I’d have to wait until after corona goes away (ugh), does anyone have any tips or insight on how to go about doing this?

Has anyone here actually done this? Can you share your experience?

Thank you!

The short answer is that it is much, much more complicated than it seems with many things to think of which can greatly influence whet your not the experience will be successful or bound to fail.

The first thing to know is that the dojos and instructors that would or could accept live-in students are very few. Karate instructors in Japan have full-time jobs. This means that a typical karate dojo will probably not be open until the evening.

If you are serious, I do have some ideas. pm me if you really want to know.

I sincerely doubt that there are many, if any, Uchi-deshi programs around the Karate world. Albeit, give this a look over...

Getting accepted might be quite difficult, depending on the program/CI. Still, I'd approach any Uchi-deshi program with a grain of salt because one never knows what the program/CI sole intent(s) are; money driven or pure and true MA training. With that, I'd visit said program with a fine tooth investigation.

Good luck, and please, let us know what you find out and decide.
