Tote Posted August 17, 2003 Posted August 17, 2003 God I'd kill myself if their where so many belts in my school as some of you guys have. All we have are White, Yellow, Brown, Black. I takes 6 years on average to get a black belt.
Musipilot Posted August 18, 2003 Posted August 18, 2003 Our system has 12 belts before you reach black. White Yellow High Yellow Green High Green Blue High Blue Brown High Brown Red High Red Advanced Red Provisional Black 6 months after receiving your provisional black, you are retested for black, and if you've maintained and improved, you get a 1st dan black. sk0t Posted August 18, 2003 Posted August 18, 2003 I think that I would QUIT if there was only 4 Belts, and I went a year or longer without testing... Belts are used as goals... I dont know why some people cant see that! Goals help people grow...4 goals, doesnt help as much as 10 or 12 or 15...especially when all of 'these particular goals" end in the same spot, black belt! sk0t"I shall not be judged by what style I know, but how I apply that style againsts yours..."
Odysseus Posted August 19, 2003 Posted August 19, 2003 I find it interesting that so many schools put Brown belt before Red belt. Before I started in TKD about 2 years ago, my martial arts experience was limited. People in general hear bits and pieces about the various arts, and one thing I always remember is that Brown comes just before Black. The Brown belts were always the idols of new students, as they are advanced students but not yet Black belts. 1st Degree Black Belt, Jhoon Rhee Style Tae Kwon Do
Musipilot Posted August 19, 2003 Posted August 19, 2003 I think in the 'lore' surrounding the philosphy of TKD, the red belt signifies 'danger', that the student is nearing the black belt, and should be respected to that level. It makes sense if you think of it that way, although I always thought brown was right before black myself. Drop by and say hi! - http://www.hbtaekwondo.com - http://www.kangselite.com

I don't know about you but I never had to set a goal to meet a belt standard. I've always known all the katas for my next belt at very least. I've always known and was good at everything required. Now for you goal setting people, Why is Black Belt a goal? If you have to have a new belt to be saticfied with your self, I woundn't want you in my school any way.
benedictbm Posted August 19, 2003 Posted August 19, 2003 i have been doing tkd for roughly four years. I am a 1st Degree Black Belt. Belt System: White Yellow Orange Green Blue Purple Red 2nd Brown 1st Brown Black Belt(JR. Black Belt if you are in our kids class)
TKD Chosen One Posted August 19, 2003 Posted August 19, 2003 (edited) My belt structure is as follows: White, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Purple, Red, Red tip, Red/Black, Black. Im really upset there's no camo-belt.........I would do anything for one..........oh to be THAT cool. I asked my instructor after class when i would be able to test for my camo belt and he burst out laughing and told me to go home. Edited August 28, 2003 by TKD Chosen One
