Shorty Posted December 31, 2002 Posted December 31, 2002 Hello, I am thinking about taking Jiu Jitsu classes. What should I expect? I've heard different things like it's all groundwork. My Sensei said it's a mixture of throws, locks, and takedowns. Any advice, opinions would be appreciated. Green Belt-Shotokan Karate
Karateka_latino Posted December 31, 2002 Posted December 31, 2002 It depends... If its a Japanese traditional Jiu jitsu, its mostly a mix of everything, but with little sparring. If its Brazilian jiu jitsu its mostly ground work and sparring with little stand up. but of course, depends on the School and the instructor.
Kensai Posted December 31, 2002 Posted December 31, 2002 Like Submission said, it depends on the school and the style. Very few of the Japanese JJ schools have full contact sparring. This is for some very good reasons, one, you'll probably break something and secondly the philosphys behind each school. If you want stand up and good ground work with sparring, I would suggest Judo. If you want really good ground work, there is no other than BJJ. Yours in Aiki
Kyle-san Posted December 31, 2002 Posted December 31, 2002 Ummm... many JJJ schools incorporate sparring as a part of their program, usually using padding and a sensible amount of force. I've sparred in both of the dojo's I've been to, the Aiki Jujitsu one and the Ketto Ryu one.
